Asir is a large province located in southern Arabia.

The land in Asir is very different from the desert. It sits on a high plateau that gets much more rain than other parts of the country. This extra water makes the land much greener. You can find thick forests of coniferous trees in sheltered spots. The weather here can change very quickly. It can be hot in the afternoon, but mornings are often very frosty. Thick fog can also roll in and hide everything from view. The mountains reach very high into the sky.
History tells us many stories about this rugged land. Long ago, in 25 B.C., Roman legions marched south from Egypt. They wanted to control trade routes for valuable things like incense. Later, in 1818, the local people fought to keep their land. Different groups like the Al-Ayedh family held control of the highlands for a time. Eventually, Muhammad ibn Ali al-Idrisi became a ruler here. After his death, the region was joined with Saudi Arabia. By 1934, a treaty made the borders official.
Many people live in the different parts of Asir. There are 17 governorates in the province. Abha is the capital and a major center. It has a population of about 422,243 people. Khamis Mushait is the largest city in the province. The total population of Asir was about 2,024,285 in 2022. Farmers in the area grow wheat, barley, and fruit. They also grow sesame in the wetter spots. People have used irrigation to help these crops grow well.
Today, Asir is changing with many new projects. The government is spending over 1 billion Saudi Riyals on new things. They are building better ways to travel and better health care. One big plan is the Soudah Peaks Project. This will turn the high Jabal Soudah into a place for mountain tourism. They may even build cable cars to help people move through the mountains. This will help more people visit and see the beautiful views.
Asir, officially known as the Aseer Province, is a significant administrative region in southern Arabia. It is a part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The province is located on a high plateau. This geography makes it quite different from the surrounding desert areas. Asir is bounded by several other regions. To the north and west is the Mecca Province. The Al-Baha Province lies to the northwest. Riyadh Province is located to the northeast. To the southeast sits the Najran Province. The southern borders are shared with the Jazan Province and the Saada Governorate of Yemen.
The name "Asir" has several possible origins that historians still debate. One theory comes from the historian Al-Masudi. He suggested the area was once called the Land of Azd. Another idea is that the name comes from the Arabic term ʿUsrah. This term might relate to the rugged terrain. Such mountains and cliffs can be very difficult to navigate. A third view was proposed by Fuad Hamza. He linked the name to the historical Banu Asir tribe. As this tribe grew in influence, their name spread to the territory. This connection was strengthened by ties to ruling families like the Al Yazid and Al Muthami.
The physical environment of Asir is defined by its extreme climate and unique vegetation. The province contains the highest peaks in Saudi Arabia. One such peak is Jabal Soudah, which reaches 3,015 meters above sea level. Because the province sits on a high plateau, it receives more rainfall than most of the country. This rain usually falls in two seasons. The main rainy season occurs in March and April. This moisture allows for much more natural vegetation than in other regions. You can find dense coniferous forests in sheltered areas. However, the weather is very extreme. The region has some of the largest diurnal temperature ranges in the world. This means the temperature changes greatly between day and night. Afternoons can be over 30 degrees Celsius. Yet, mornings can be extremely frosty. Thick fog often rolls in and reduces visibility to nearly zero percent.
History shows that Asir has been a strategic location for many centuries. In 25 B.C., Roman legions marched south from Ancient Egypt. They wanted to control overland trade routes. These routes connected the Mediterranean Sea to Hadhramaut in Yemen. The Romans sought to capture Marib to control the trade of incense. Incense was a priceless commodity at that time. Later, in 1818, the local Asiris fought against Ottoman Egypt forces. After the Ottomans withdrew in 1840, the Al-Ayedh dynasty controlled the highlands. Eventually, Muhammad ibn Ali al-Idrisi established political control around 1906. He ruled the sovereign Emirate of Asir until his death in 1920. Following his death, Ibn Saud began annexing the region. The Saudis took control of the capital, Abha, in 1920. The incorporation of Asir was completed by 1923. The borders were finally formalized in 1934 through the Treaty of Taif.
The population of Asir is organized into 17 distinct governorates. As of 2022, the total population was estimated at 2,024,285 people. Khamis Mushait is the largest city, with 601,305 residents. Abha is the provincial capital and the second-largest city. Abha has a population of 422,243. Other notable governorates include Muhayil, Bisha, and Ahad Rafidah. The economy has deep roots in agriculture. Historically, the region produced coffee, wheat, alfalfa, and barley. Farmers also grew senna and frankincense. In wetter areas, they grew sesame. People used straw to weave mats, hats, and baskets. They even wove tents from straw. Today, modern irrigation has greatly expanded the production of wheat and fruit.
Modern development is currently transforming the province through large-scale projects. In 2019, the Saudi government launched an infrastructure project costing over 1 billion Saudi Riyals. This initiative aims to improve health care, transportation, and municipal services. It is part of the Saudi Vision 2030 plan. This plan seeks to diversify income away from petroleum. One major project is the Soudah Peaks Project. Launched in 2023 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, it focuses on Jabal Soudah. The goal is to create a luxury mountain tourism destination. Future plans include mountain cable car systems. These systems will help tourists move through the rugged mountains. The Asir Development Authority also wants to create environmentally friendly transport systems. These will help preserve the natural beauty of the province.
Education and social systems are also well-established in the region. King Khalid University is the most prominent institution of higher education. It was created in 1998 by a royal decree. The main campus is located in Abha. It offers many programs in medicine, engineering, and computer science. The university serves both male and female students. For younger students, the Ministry of Education manages a large network of public schools. These schools are found in urban centers and remote mountainous villages. Additionally, the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation manages centers for technical education. These institutions ensure that people in the province have access to various types of learning.
