These animals have a special way to make babies. This is called spawning. It means the eggs are fertilized outside the mother's body. During this time, males focus on the egg sacs. A female lays two sacs at a time. Each sac can hold up to 70 eggs. Often, the parents help care for the young.

Some species have very small lungs. Some do not have lungs at all. This happens in certain types of these animals. Their young may also have small gills. This occurs if they live in very cold water. This water must be rich in oxygen.

Scientists have found fossils of these animals. Fossils are the remains of creatures from the past. These show they lived in the Miocene time. They have lived in Asia and Eastern Europe for a long time. There are 100 known species in this group.
