The bank started in 1966. It is based in Mandaluyong, Philippines. Many countries are members. In 1966, there were 31 members. By 2019, there were 69 members. Japan and the United States hold the most shares. This means they have a big say in the bank.

At first, the bank helped with food and farms. In the 1970s, it helped with schools and health. It also helped build roads and power lines. Later, it helped with new energy projects. In the 1990s, the bank made poverty reduction a main goal.

The bank also helps during hard times. It gave money to help after big earthquakes and tsunamis. It also helps fight diseases. One special part is a scholarship program. It helps about 300 students every year. These students study in 10 different countries. After they finish, they go home to help their own lands grow.
