He served as the eighth and final president of the country from 2014 until 2021. His life has been defined by a deep study of how societies function and how governments are built. This expertise shaped his goals to transform Afghanistan into a technocratic state. A technocratic state is one where experts and technical skills guide political decisions. Ghani aimed to use this approach to modernize the nation's systems and economy.

Ghani was born on May 19, 1949, in the Logar Province. At that time, the area was part of the Kingdom of Afghanistan. He was born to Shah Pesand, a clerk, and Kawbaba Lodin. He belongs to the Ahmadzai Pashtun tribe. His early education took place in Afghanistan, including secondary schooling in Kabul. During the 1966–1967 school year, he studied in Oregon, USA, as a foreign exchange student. This experience allowed him to serve on a student council at Lake Oswego High School.

His academic journey led him to several prestigious institutions around the world. In 1973, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in political studies from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. He later moved to the United States to pursue advanced studies. In 1977, he received a Master's in cultural anthropology from Columbia University. He eventually earned a PhD in cultural anthropology from the same university in 1983. His doctoral thesis focused on the history of production and domination in Afghanistan between 1747 and 1901.

Before returning to Afghanistan, Ghani built a career in academia and international finance. He served as an associate professor of anthropology at Johns Hopkins University from 1983 to 1991. He also taught briefly at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1985, he worked as a Fulbright Scholar researching madrassas in Pakistan. From 1991 to 2001, he worked at the World Bank as a Lead Anthropologist. During this decade, he spent five years working on projects in China, India, and Russia. He also attended leadership training at Harvard-INSEAD and the World Bank-Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Ghani returned to Afghanistan in December 2001 after living abroad for 24 years. He first served as a special adviser to the United Nations. Following this, he became the finance minister in President Hamid Karzai's cabinet in 2002. As finance minister, he implemented major economic reforms. He issued a new currency and computerized treasury operations to increase transparency. He also worked to centralize revenue collection and overhaul customs. In 2004, he chose to become the chancellor of Kabul University instead of staying in the cabinet.

The 2014 presidential election was a turning point in his political career. The election was highly controversial and faced many disputes. Because of these disagreements, the United States mediated negotiations between Ghani and his rival, Abdullah Abdullah. This resulted in a national unity government where power was split 50-50. Ghani served as president, while Abdullah became the chief executive. Ghani was later re-elected in 2020 following a delayed result from the 2019 elections.

As president, Ghani sought to modernize the government with young, well-educated leaders. He aimed to make Afghanistan a trade hub between Central and South Asia. He also tried to improve relations with Pakistan and make peace with Taliban insurgents. However, many of his goals remained unfulfilled. He faced challenges from political rivalries and attempts to reduce the power of former warlords. His administration also faced criticism regarding his relationship with the United States during the war.

Ghani's presidency ended abruptly on August 15, 2021. On this date, the Taliban took control of the capital city, Kabul. Ghani and his staff fled the country and found refuge in the United Arab Emirates. He stated that he left to avoid further violence in the country. He argued that staying would only add more tragedy to Afghanistan's history. His departure was met with both condemnation and debate. Some people accused him of abandoning the nation, while others discussed his various political choices.
