It is what remains when a fire is finished. Most ash is made of minerals. Some ash still has tiny bits of burnt material in it. The color of the ash can tell us a lot. Dark ash means the wood did not burn all the way.

Ash is very useful for many jobs. People use it as fertilizer to help plants grow. This is common in slash-and-burn farming. In this way, farmers burn dry plants to make the soil rich. Ash can also help clean things. It can work like soap to wash hands. It can even be used to wash clothes.

What is in the ash depends on what burned. Wood ash has a lot of calcium. It also has potassium, which is a helpful mineral. Different trees have different amounts of these parts. For example, bark has more silicon than wood.
