He was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He began piano lessons when he was only six years old. Schnabel was not just a player. He was also a composer who wrote his own music. Many people loved his deep and spiritual style. He did not focus on fast finger tricks. Instead, he focused on the meaning of the music.

He was very famous for playing music by Beethoven. Between 1932 and 1935, he did something new. He made the first recordings of all Beethoven piano sonatas. These are songs written for the piano. This work was so important that the Library of Congress kept it in a special registry.

Schnabel lived in many places. He lived in Austria, Germany, England, and the United States. He had to leave Germany in 1933 because he was Jewish. He later became a citizen of the United States. He also taught many students at a college in Michigan. His family members were also musicians. His son, Karl Ulrich, became a famous piano teacher.
