He used the theater to tell deep stories about people. Many of his works are still performed all over the world today. His play *Death of a Salesman* is a very important piece of American history. It was the first play to win three major honors at once. These were a Tony Award, a New York Drama Circle award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. His writing helped people understand the lives of ordinary people in the 20th century.

Miller's life began in Manhattan, New York, in 1915. He grew up in a Jewish family of Polish descent. His father ran a large clothing business with 400 workers. However, the family lost almost everything during the Wall Street crash of 1929. They had to move from Manhattan to Brooklyn to start over. As a teenager, Miller delivered bread every morning before school. This hard work helped his family during a difficult time. He later wrote about these early years in a book.

Miller found his path through writing and studying. He went to the University of Michigan to study English. While he was a student, he wrote his first play called *No Villain*. This play won the Avery Hopwood Award for him. This prize made him realize he could be a professional playwright. He also learned how to build plays from a professor named Kenneth Rowe. After college, he worked many different jobs to pay his bills. He even worked in a navy yard for a while.

His career grew quickly with many famous successes. In 1947, his play *All My Sons* became a big hit on Broadway. This play won him his first Tony Award for being a great author. In 1948, he built a small studio in Connecticut to write. There, he wrote most of *Death of a Salesman* in just a few weeks. This play was performed 742 times on stage. He also wrote *The Crucible*, which is about the old witch trials in Salem.
