Arthur Holly Compton was a famous American physicist.

He spent his life studying the tiny parts of our world. His work helped us understand how light and energy behave. He was born on September 10, 1892, in Wooster, Ohio. His family was very smart and loved learning. His brothers also became leaders of big colleges. Compton himself studied at Princeton University. He earned his Ph.D. in physics in 1916.

One of his biggest discoveries was the Compton effect. This is the way light interacts with tiny pieces of matter. Before this, scientists thought light only moved in waves. Compton used X-rays to test this idea. He saw that X-rays hitting electrons would change. The light lost some of its energy to the electron. Because it lost energy, the light changed its wavelength. This showed that light also acts like tiny particles called photons.

This discovery was a very big deal in science. It was a hard idea for people to accept at first. Many scientists believed light was only a wave. Compton's work proved that light has a dual nature. This means it acts like both a wave and a particle. Because of this work, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1927. He shared this prize with C. T. R. Wilson. This honor showed the world how important his discovery was.

Compton also studied rays coming from outer space. These are called cosmic rays. Scientists were not sure what they were made of. Compton traveled to many places like Mexico and Australia. He measured these rays at different spots on Earth. He found that the rays were stronger at the North and South Poles. He proved that cosmic rays are mostly made of charged particles. This was a different idea than what other scientists thought.

During World War II, Compton did very important work. He was a key leader in the Manhattan Project. This was a large project to develop nuclear weapons. He helped oversee the creation of the first nuclear reactor. This machine was called Chicago Pile-1. It went critical on December 2, 1942. Later, he became the leader of Washington University in St. Louis. He helped the school become more fair for all students.
