His thesis was titled "Die willkürlichen Functionen in der mathematischen Physik." During his youth, he was a member of a student fraternity. This involvement resulted in a dueling scar on his face.

Sommerfeld's academic career moved through several important German cities. In 1893, he moved to the University of Göttingen. This city was a major center for mathematics. There, he worked as an assistant to the mathematician Felix Klein. They collaborated for thirteen years on a text called "Die Theorie des Kreisels." This work covered the theory of rotating bodies and its applications. In 1897, he became a professor at the Bergakademie Clausthal. Later, in 1900, he moved to the Technische Hochschule Aachen. At Aachen, he developed important theories regarding hydrodynamics.

In 1906, Sommerfeld reached a major milestone in his career. He was appointed as an Ordinarius Professor of Physics in Munich. He also became the director of the new Theoretical Physics Institute at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. This appointment was made by Wilhelm Röntgen. At the time, experimental physics held a higher status than theoretical physics. Sommerfeld helped change this perception in the scientific community. He proved that mathematical physics could drive new discoveries. Experimental work was then used to verify the theories he helped build.

Sommerfeld's impact as a mentor is reflected in his students' success. He served as a doctoral or postdoctoral advisor to seven Nobel Prize winners. He also supervised at least 30 other famous physicists and chemists. Among his many students were Werner Heisenberg and Wolfgang Pauli. He taught general courses on topics like mechanics, electrodynamics, and thermodynamics. He also held specialized seminars to discuss current issues in physics. These sessions helped students learn to solve complex, modern problems. From 1942 to 1951, he organized his notes into a six-volume series. This series is titled "Lectures on Theoretical Physics."

His legacy is preserved through both his writings and his students. The six volumes of his lectures remain significant scientific records. His work in tribology, the study of friction and lubrication, was also recognized. He was named one of the 23 "Men of Tribology" for his research at Aachen. Sommerfeld's life ended on 26 April 1951. He is buried in the Munich Nordfriedhof.
