To feed such a large group, army ants use a special way of working. Most ants send out a few scouts to look for food. Army ants instead send out a large, leaderless group to hunt together. This group works as one to overwhelm their prey. They can eat as many as 500,000 prey animals in a single day!

Scientists have studied these ants to understand how they are related. For a long time, people thought different groups evolved these traits separately. This is called convergent evolution, where different animals develop similar tools. However, genetic tests in 2003 showed a different story. They suggested many groups came from one common ancestor. This ancestor lived about 100 million years ago. It lived around the time Africa and South America began to separate.

There are many different kinds of army ants in the world. The largest group in the New World is the genus Neivamyrmex. This group has more than 120 different species. The most well-known species is Eciton burchellii. In the Old World, many belong to the genus Dorylus. These are known as driver ants and are very aggressive.

The colony is organized into different roles. Workers are sterile females that do the daily jobs. Soldiers are larger and have big jaws to protect the group. Males are large and have wings, which makes them look like wasps.

Everything in the colony relies on the queen.

To feed millions of individuals, army ants use a cooperative hunting method. Most ant species send out individual scouts to find food and then recruit others. Army ants instead dispatch a leaderless group of foragers to hunt together. This group works as a single unit to detect and overwhelm prey.

This massive foraging effort is incredibly effective. A single colony can consume up to 500,000 prey animals in just one day. Their diet includes insects, spiders, and small vertebrates. Some underground species even eat earthworms, turtle eggs, or oily seeds. This high level of predation can significantly change the diversity of the local environment.

The first is the nomadic phase, or wandering phase. This begins about 10 days after the queen lays her eggs and lasts roughly 15 days. During this time, the ants move during the day to capture food for the developing larvae. At dusk, they form a new bivouac, which they change almost daily. The second stage is the stationary phase, also called the statary phase. This begins when the larvae pupate and lasts for two to three weeks. During this stage, the colony stays in one bivouac. The food previously meant for larvae is now fed exclusively to the queen.

Army ant colonies are highly organized into different physical groups, or castes. The workers are usually sterile females that handle most colony tasks. Many worker species are blind or have very small eyes. Some species show polymorphism, meaning workers have different physical shapes for different jobs. Soldiers are a larger caste with much larger mandibles, or jaws.

These soldiers protect the colony and help carry heavy prey to the bivouac. Males are much larger and have wings, making them look like wasps. They are born as part of a sexual brood and fly off to find a queen. Because of their size, people sometimes call them "sausage flies."

The queen is the most critical member of the colony. She is much larger than the workers and lacks wings. Her abdomen, known as the gaster, is greatly enlarged to support massive egg production.

An army ant queen can produce between 3 and 4 million eggs every month. This enormous reproductive capacity results in colonies composed of millions of related individuals. Because there is only one queen, the colony's survival depends entirely on her. If a queen dies from age, illness, or an accident, the colony will likely die too. In such cases, workers may attempt to merge with a sister colony to survive.

History and science have helped us understand how these ants are related. For a long time, scientists thought different lineages evolved these traits separately through convergent evolution. This is when different species develop similar traits independently. However, genetic analysis in 2003 changed this understanding. The data suggested that several groups actually evolved from a single common ancestor. This ancestor lived approximately 100 million years ago, around the time Africa and South America separated. Despite this, some other lineages, such as the Leptanillinae, are still considered independent evolutionary events.

There are many different types of army ants across the globe. In the New World, the largest genus is Neivamyrmex, which includes more than 120 species. The most famous species in this region is Eciton burchellii. In the Old World, army ants are often divided into the tribes Aenictini and Dorylini. The genus Aenictus contains more than 50 species. The Dorylini tribe includes the genus Dorylus, which are known as driver ants.
