Arminius grew up as a prince of his tribe. His father was a chief named Segimerus. Arminius actually lived in the Roman Empire for many years. He learned to speak Latin and joined the Roman army. He even earned Roman citizenship and the rank of eques. This training was very important for his future. He learned how Roman soldiers moved and fought. These skills helped him plan his own battles later.

Arminius wanted to keep his people free from Roman rule. He began to secretly plan a revolt. He worked to unite many different tribes. This was a hard job because the tribes often fought each other. In AD 9, he told a Roman leader named Varus about a fake rebellion. This was a trick to lure the Romans into a trap. The Romans marched into a thick, narrow forest.
