Arminianism is a way of thinking about faith.

Arminius had a different view than many other teachers. Some believed God chose people for salvation before they were born. Arminius thought this choice was based on a person's faith. He believed God gives grace to help people. He said people can choose to accept or resist this grace.
His followers were called Remonstrants. They wrote down their ideas in a paper. This led to many debates. Some leaders in Holland even banned his followers. Later, the law protected their religion.
Many groups use these ideas. In England, some Baptists held these views.

Arminianism is a special way of thinking about faith within Protestantism.
At the heart of these beliefs is the idea of grace. Grace is a gift from God that helps people. Arminians believe God gives a special kind of grace to everyone. This is called prevenient grace, which helps prepare a person. They also believe that people can choose to accept or resist this grace. This is different from other views where God's choice is fixed. In Arminianism, God's grace allows for a person's faith to matter.
Jacobus Arminius did not invent these ideas all by himself. He was influenced by many thinkers before him. For example, Balthasar Hubmaier shared similar views nearly a century earlier. Sebastian Castellio also held ideas that influenced the movement.
History shows that these ideas faced many hard times. After Arminius died, his followers were called Remonstrants. They wrote a document in 1610 called the Remonstrance. This led to a big meeting called the Synod of Dort in 1618. Many Arminians were removed from their jobs or even sent away. They were even told to stay silent about their beliefs. However, things changed twelve years later. The land of Holland officially gave Arminianism protection as a religion.
These ideas traveled to many other places and groups. In England, some Baptists followed these views in the 1600s.

Arminianism is a theological tradition within Protestantism. It emerged during the early 17th century. This tradition is based on the ideas of Jacobus Arminius. He was a Dutch theologian and pastor.
The core mechanism of Arminianism involves the concept of grace. Central to this belief is prevenient grace. This is a form of grace that God provides to all people. Prevenient grace prepares a person for regeneration. Regeneration is the process of being spiritually reborn. Arminians believe that this grace is universal. However, they also believe that this grace is resistible. This means a person can choose to accept or reject it.
There are two main schools of thought within this tradition. The first is Classical Arminianism. Jacobus Arminius is the main contributor to this school. The second is Wesleyan Arminianism. John Wesley is the primary figure for this branch.
Arminianism did not begin solely with Jacobus Arminius. Many earlier movements held similar views. For example, the Waldensians affirmed individual freedom. Anabaptist theologian Balthasar Hubmaier held similar views in the 1500s.
The history of the movement involved intense conflict. After Arminius died, his followers were called Remonstrants. In 1610, they submitted the Remonstrance to the States General. This document expressed their disagreement with strict Calvinism. In 1618, the Synod of Dort was held to address these disputes. The synod was mostly composed of Dutch Calvinists. There were 102 Calvinist participants. In contrast, 13 Arminians were banned from voting. The synod condemned Arminianism as heresy. Many Arminians were removed from office or imprisoned. However, Holland granted the religion protection twelve years later.
Arminian ideas spread to several different groups in England. In the 17th century, some Baptists followed these views. These were known as General Baptists. They believed in general atonement.
The influence of Arminianism can be seen in many modern movements. In the 18th century, John Wesley helped develop Methodism. His work created the Wesleyan Arminian tradition.
