Arizonasaurus is a unique genus of prehistoric reptile. Its name means "Arizona reptile." This animal belonged to a group of archosaurs called ctenosauriscids.

Archosaurs are a major group of reptiles that includes modern birds and crocodiles. Arizonasaurus lived during the Middle Triassic period. This was approximately 243 million years ago. It lived in the Moenkopi Formation. This area is located in what is now northern Arizona.

Studying this animal helps scientists understand how early reptiles evolved and spread across the world.

The most striking feature of Arizonasaurus was its large back sail. This sail was not made of skin alone. It was formed by extremely elongated neural spines. Neural spines are the long, bony parts that grow upward from the vertebrae in the spine. These tall bones created a massive structure along the animal's back. This sail was a common trait among other basal archosaurs. For example, other ctenosauriscids like Ctenosauriscus, Bromsgroveia, and Hypselorhachis also possessed similar sails.

Scientists have identified specific physical traits that distinguish Arizonasaurus from its relatives. In 2005, researcher Sterling Nesbitt identified several unique characteristics. One feature is a deep fossa located on the maxilla. A fossa is a hollow or depression in a bone. This specific fossa is hidden from view on the posteroventral edge of an upward-pointing process. Another key identifier is found in the pelvic girdle, or the hip area. There is a tongue-groove attachment located between the pubis and the ilium. These specific bone shapes help paleontologists tell this genus apart from others.

The history of discovering Arizonasaurus involves two major scientific milestones. The first occurred in 1947 when Samuel Paul Welles named the species. He named it Arizonasaurus babbitti. His description was based on a few teeth and a maxilla, which is a bone in the upper jaw. This specimen was labeled UCMP 36232. Decades later, a much more detailed discovery was made. In 2002, Sterling Nesbitt found a fairly complete skeleton.

Classification is a complex process that places Arizonasaurus within the tree of life. It belongs to the family Ctenosauriscidae. This family includes close relatives such as Ctenosauriscus. Arizonasaurus is also part of the larger group known as Poposauroidea. Research shows that ctenosauriscids were closely related to the poposaurids. This relationship is supported by several shared derived characteristics. These are specific traits that evolved in a common ancestor.

Scientists have used these features to show that poposauroids and ctenosauriscids form a single group. This group is considered more derived than the rauisuchians.

The study of Arizonasaurus provides important clues about the history of life on Earth. Its presence in the Middle Triassic Moenkopi Formation is very significant. Because poposauroids lived this early in the Middle Triassic, it changes our understanding of evolution. It suggests that the divergence between birds and crocodiles occurred earlier than scientists previously thought. This means the split between these two major lineages happened much sooner in history.

Furthermore, these reptiles help explain how animals moved across the globe. The existence of ctenosauriscids shows that Triassic fauna were very widespread. These types of animals can now be found in many different places. Their fossils are located in Europe, Asia, North America, and Africa.

This wide distribution helps scientists map how landmasses and animals interacted. The fauna of the Moenkopi Formation represents a transitional stage. It sits between the life forms of older ages and those of younger ages. This makes Arizonasaurus a vital piece of the prehistoric puzzle.
