Scientists find these relatives by looking at their bones. They look for very small details in the skeleton. Most members have special shapes in their spine bones. They also have a specific bone shape in their snout. This is called a posterodorsal process. It is a branch of bone near the nostrils. They also lack certain tiny holes in their spine. These shared traits help scientists group them together.

Learning about these animals took a long time. Friedrich von Huene first used the name in 1946. However, scientists did not agree on the group for many years. In the 1980s, researchers used a method called cladistics to sort them. Jacques Gauthier reused the term at a big meeting in 1982. He also wrote about it in his 1984 Ph.D. thesis. Later, scientists like Michael J. Benton and Susan E. Evans helped define them.

There are four main groups within Archosauromorpha. The rhynchosaurs were stocky animals that ate plants.

The allokotosaurs were also plant eaters. The Archosauriformes were a huge and diverse group. This group includes dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and birds. It also includes the crocodilians we see today.

Some long-necked reptiles like Tanystropheus are also part of this history. One had a neck longer than its entire body!

You can see these connections in animals today. Birds are actually the last of the feathered dinosaurs.

Crocodiles are also living members of this ancient lineage. Even turtles might be related to this group. Some scientists believe turtles are part of a group called Archelosauria. This group links turtles to crocodilians. It shows how much life has changed over millions of years.

This group includes all reptiles more closely related to archosaurs than to lepidosaurs. Archosaurs are a famous group that includes crocodilians, dinosaurs, and birds. This lineage represents one of the most diverse branches of reptile history. Members first appeared during the late Middle Permian or Late Permian periods. They eventually became much more common and diverse during the Triassic period.

Scientists identify these animals by looking at specific skeletal features. These subtle bone shapes allow researchers to group different animals together. One key feature is the presence of laminae on the vertebrae. These are thin, plate-like structures on the spine bones. Most advanced members also have a posterodorsal process of the premaxilla. This is a rear-facing branch of bone at the tip of the snout. It stretches up below the nostrils to touch the nasal bones. They also lack notochordal canals and the entepicondylar foramen of the humerus.

Understanding these relationships took many decades of scientific work. Friedrich von Huene first used the term Archosauromorpha in 1946. However, scientists did not have a consensus on reptile relationships for a long time. The development of cladistics changed how researchers sorted these lineages. Cladistics is a method used to study evolutionary relationships. Jacques Gauthier reused the term at a 1982 meeting of the American Society of Zoologists. He later used it in his 1984 Ph.D. thesis. Studies by Gauthier, Michael J. Benton, and Susan E. Evans helped establish these connections in the 1980s.

There are four primary groups within Archosauromorpha. The first is Rhynchosauria, which are known as "beak reptiles."

These were stocky herbivores with highly modified, wide skulls. The second group is Allokotosauria. This group includes the unusual, iguana-like Trilophosaurus and the Azendohsauridae.

These two groups were plant eaters that did not survive the end of the Triassic. The third group is the Archosauriformes. This is a massive, diverse group that includes dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and birds.

The fourth group is a collection of long-necked reptiles. This group includes Protorosaurus and tanystropheids, such as the famous Tanystropheus.

The Archosauriformes group is especially significant because it produced many famous animals. This group includes the semiaquatic crocodilians we see today. It also includes birds, which are the last of the feathered dinosaurs. These animals have continued to diversify and dominate the Earth long after the Triassic-Jurassic extinction. Even though early archosauromorphs looked like modern lizards, this group reached incredible extremes. They produced giant sauropod dinosaurs and flying pterosaurs. They also produced apex predators like the theropod dinosaurs.

Some members of Archosauromorpha are still a subject of scientific debate. The long-necked reptiles, once called Prolacertiformes, are considered polyphyletic. This means they do not all share a single common ancestor. For example, the famous Tanystropheus had a neck longer than its entire body.

While they share many traits with archosauromorphs, they also share traits with lepidosaurs. Some researchers even suggest that turtles and their extinct relatives, the pantestudines, belong in this group.

Modern science continues to refine how we view these ancient reptiles. Genetic studies have provided new clues about their connections. Some evidence suggests turtles are more closely related to crocodilians than to lizards. This would place turtles within a group called Archelosauria. If this is true, Archosauromorpha might be a much wider group than scientists originally thought. Whether through bone structure or DNA, the study of Archosauromorpha helps us map the history of life on Earth. It shows how a single lineage can lead to everything from tiny birds to massive crocodiles.
