Archaeogenetics

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Archaeogenetics is a fascinating way to study the past. It uses the study of heredity, or genetics, to look at ancient DNA. This DNA acts like a tiny code found in old things. Scientists can find it in bones, eggshells, or even old seeds. They can also find it in skin that was preserved by salt or air. By studying these tiny bits, we learn how plants and animals changed over time. This science also shows us how groups of people moved across the world.

Finding and cleaning this old DNA is a very careful job. First, scientists find an excavation site by looking for bones or using x-ray tools. They use small brushes and trowels to dig them up slowly. To keep the DNA safe, they wear gloves and store bones at -20 °C. This prevents new DNA from getting into the old samples. Next, they grind the bone into a fine powder. They often use a method with silica to clean the sample. Silica is a material that grabs the DNA and pulls it away from other things. This makes the DNA ready for a process called PCR, which makes many copies of the DNA.

Many important thinkers helped build this science. A Polish scientist named Ludwik Hirszfeld studied blood groups in 1910. He found that blood types and hair color were not linked. Later, Arthur Mourant helped map the genetics of the world. He discovered new blood group systems like the Rhesus system. William Boyd also did important work in the 1950s. He studied how blood groups are inherited and not changed by the environment. These researchers provided the foundation for how we study biological relationships today.

There are many specific facts about how DNA changes over time. DNA is very fragile and can be broken by bacteria in the soil. This is called bacterial putrefaction, and it can damage DNA many times over. When a fossil is freshly out of the ground, it can have six times more DNA than stored bones. Scientists also use massive parallel sequencing to read DNA. This method allows them to look at many DNA segments all at once. In February 2021, scientists found a huge milestone. They retrieved DNA from a mammoth that lived over a million years ago.

Archaeogenetics helps us connect the dots between the past and today. Scientists take the ancient DNA they find and compare it to living things. They use special computer software to see how they match. This is like comparing an old, torn map to a new, clear one. It helps us identify species even when the bones look strange. This work helps us understand the history of every living thing on Earth. It turns old, dusty fossils into stories about life.
