People live in big cities nearby. Some cities are near the sea. Riyadh is a large city there.
It is a very big and special place.
The Arabian Desert is a very large place.
The land is mostly dry. It gets very little rain each year. The sun shines for a long time. This makes the desert very hot. In the summer, it can get extremely hot near the sea. At night, it can even freeze.
You might see many colors here. Some dunes are red, orange, or purple. This is because of the minerals in the sand. There are also salt flats and quicksand.
Many animals live in this tough home. You can find sand cats and oryx. Some animals, like the honey badger, have died out. This happened because of hunting and habitat loss. People now use special reserves to protect them.
Many people live near the desert. They speak Arabic and follow Islam. Big cities like Riyadh are in the center. Other large cities sit near the Persian Gulf. The desert also holds useful things like oil and natural gas.
The Arabian Desert is a huge wilderness in West Asia.
The land has many different shapes and colors. Some areas are filled with red dunes. Other parts have gravel or gypsum plains. One famous area is the Rub' al-Khali, or The Empty Quarter. This is one of the largest continuous bodies of sand on Earth. The sand is mostly made of quartz and feldspar. Iron oxide on the grains makes the sand look orange, purple, or red. Some dunes can reach heights of 250 meters.
The weather in the desert is very extreme. Most of the land is very dry. Most places get only 100 mm of rain per year. Some rare spots get as little as 50 mm. The sun shines for a very long time here. It shines for about 3,400 hours every year. In the summer, low areas can get very hot. Temperatures near the Persian Gulf can reach 50°C. At night, the temperature can even drop to a freeze.
Many living things have found ways to survive here. There are about 900 species of plants in the region. You might see saltbush or small trees like Acacia. There are also 102 types of native mammals. These include the sand cat, the oryx, and the Arabian wolf. Some animals, like the honey badger, have died out in this area. This happened because of hunting and habitat loss. Now, people use protected reserves to help animals like the sand gazelle.
Many people live near this vast desert. Most people in the region are Arabs. They speak Arabic and many follow Islam. The city of Riyadh is in the center of Saudi Arabia. It has more than 7 million people living there. Other large cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi sit near the coast. The desert also holds important natural resources. People find oil, natural gas, phosphates, and sulfur under the land.
The Arabian Desert is a massive wilderness located in West Asia.
The geography of the desert is very diverse. Much of the land sits in Saudi Arabia. It also extends into southern Iraq, southern Jordan, and central Qatar. It covers most of the Abu Dhabi emirate in the United Arab Emirates. It also reaches western Oman and northeastern Yemen. The ecoregion includes the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt and the Negev desert in Israel.
One major feature is the Rub' al-Khali, also called The Empty Quarter. This is a sedimentary basin. It stretches from the southwest to the northeast across the Arabian Shelf. This area is one of the largest continuous bodies of sand on Earth. The sands are mostly silicates. They consist of 80 to 90% quartz and the rest is feldspar. Iron oxide coats the grains. This process colors the dunes orange, purple, and red. Some dunes reach heights of 250 meters.
Other landforms create a varied landscape. The Ad-Dahna is a corridor of sandy terrain. It connects the An-Nafud desert in the north to the Rub' al-Khali in the southeast. The Tuwaiq escarpment is another important feature. It is an arc made of limestone cliffs, plateaus, and canyons. There are also brackish salt flats. Some of these include the quicksands of Umm al Samim. The Sharqiya Sands sit near the east coast of Oman.
The climate is a subtropical, hot desert climate. Most of the desert is very dry. Most areas receive only 100 mm of rain per year. Some rare hyperarid areas receive only 30 to 50 mm. The sunshine duration index is extremely high. It typically averages around 3,400 hours per year. This means clear skies prevail most of the time. Temperatures are high throughout the year. In the summer, low-lying areas often exceed 40°C. Near the Persian Gulf, temperatures can reach 50°C. At night, temperatures can drop to a seasonal freeze.
Life in the desert requires special adaptations. There are about 900 species of plants in the ecoregion. The Rub' al-Khali has very limited plant diversity. It only has about 37 species. Common plants include saltbush and the woody perennial Calligonum comosum. There are 102 species of native mammals. These include the Arabian oryx, the sand cat, and the Arabian wolf. Some animals, like the Asiatic cheetah, used to live here. However, many species have faced serious threats.
Conservation efforts are working to protect the desert. About 4.37% of the ecoregion is now in protected areas. Saudi Arabia uses reserves like the 'Uruq Bani Ma'arid Reserve. In this reserve, scientists reintroduced the Arabian oryx and sand gazelle in 1995. The United Arab Emirates also has several protected areas. These include the Arabian Oryx Protected Area. These efforts help prevent more species from dying out. The desert is a complex system of life and land.
Humans live alongside this extreme environment. The major ethnic group is the Arabs. Most people speak Arabic and follow Islam. Large cities exist within or near the desert. Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia and has over 7 million people. Other cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi are on the coast. The desert also provides important natural resources. People extract oil, natural gas, phosphates, and sulfur from the region.
