Appenzell is a region in northeast Switzerland. It is part of a larger area called Appenzellerland.

The land has many different looks. In the south, there are high mountains. The Alpstein range is found here. The highest peak is called Säntis. It reaches 2,502 meters. To the north, the land has green hills. Small towns and villages sit in the green valleys. Two streams flow through the area. One stream is the Urnasch. It joins the Sitter river. The Sitter flows through the capital, Appenzell.

Since 1597, the land has been split into two parts. These are called half-cantons. They are Appenzell Innerrhoden and Appenzell Ausserrhoden.

Innerrhoden is in the south. It is a mountainous place. Most people there are Catholic. They keep many old customs. Herdsmen wear red waistcoats and bright shorts. Ausserrhoden is in the north. It is more industrial. People there make cotton goods and fine embroidery.

In the past, both parts held a Landsgemeinde. This was a meeting held in the open air. All citizens over twenty years old could attend. Ausserrhoden stopped this practice in 1997.
