He attended several schools, including Bukit Mertajam High School and the Malay College Kuala Kangsar. He later earned a degree in Malay Studies from the University of Malaya. As a student, he was very active in many different groups. He served as the president of the National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students. He also helped found the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia, or ABIM, in 1971. These early years helped him learn how to lead and organize people.

His political career moved very quickly after he joined the UMNO party in 1982.

He was elected as the Member of Parliament for Permatang Pauh that same year. Anwar held many important jobs in the government during the 1980s. He served as the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports in 1983. He was also the Minister of Agriculture in 1984 and the Minister of Education in 1986. By 1991, he had become the Minister of Finance. In 1993, he reached a very high position as the deputy prime minister.

Life became very difficult for Anwar during the late 1990s.

He had a major disagreement with the prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, about how to handle the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Because of this conflict, Anwar was removed from all his government jobs in 1998. He faced legal battles and was sent to prison twice. He was first jailed in April 1999, but his conviction was later overturned. He was released in 2004. He later faced another prison sentence in 2015. Anwar joined the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) in 1982. This party was part of the long-ruling Barisan Nasional coalition. He was elected as the Member of Parliament for Permatang Pauh that same year. His rise through the government was very rapid. He served as Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports in 1983. He then became Minister of Agriculture in 1984. In 1986, he became the Minister of Education. During this time, he changed the national language's name to Bahasa Melayu. By 1991, he was appointed Minister of Finance. In 1993, he became the 7th deputy prime minister under Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

In 1997, the Asian financial crisis caused great economic instability.

As finance minister, Anwar supported free-market principles. He advocated for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) plan to stabilize the economy. He implemented an austerity package that cut government spending by 18 percent. He also cut ministerial salaries and deferred large projects. He refused to provide government bailouts for banks. He believed the banks should protect themselves. These actions caused conflict with Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. Their disagreement over how to govern during the crisis led to a major political split.

In 1998, Mahathir Mohamad removed Anwar from all his government posts. This led Anwar to lead the Reformasi movement against the government. Anwar faced serious legal challenges during this period. He was jailed in April 1999 on charges of corruption and sodomy. He was released in 2004 after his conviction was overturned. In 2014, he attempted to become the Menteri Besar of Selangor. This caused a political crisis and led to a second prison sentence in 2015.

Despite these hardships, he remained a central figure for the political opposition.

Significant changes occurred for Anwar in 2018. While he was still in prison, the Pakatan Harapan coalition won the general election. King Muhammad V granted Anwar a royal pardon. He was released from prison in May 2018.

He returned to parliament via a by-election in Port Dickson. After a period as the opposition leader from 2020 to 2022, he won a plurality of seats in the 2022 election. He formed a unity government. This cabinet included members from Pakatan Harapan, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), and UMNO. This coalition was formed to ensure stability after a period of political crisis.

Anwar's leadership involves complex social and regional issues. He has moved from supporting affirmative action for Malays to calling for need-based support. He criticizes the concept of Ketuanan Melayu. As the ASEAN chairman since January 2025, he has worked on regional peace. He helped facilitate a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. This addressed a long-standing border dispute through diplomacy.
