This movement often targets the influence of religious leaders on a country. People may disagree with how much power a church should have. Some people oppose clergy because of moral issues or institutional problems. Others disagree with how religious ideas are interpreted. This tension has shaped many parts of history across the world.

In France, anti-clericalism became very violent during the French Revolution. Revolutionaries believed the church helped maintain unfair systems. On July 12, 1790, the government passed the Civil Constitution of the Clergy. This law required priests to swear loyalty to the French government. Only seven out of 160 bishops refused to take this oath. During the Reign of Terror, the state took church property and exiled 30,000 priests.

The government even replaced the Christian calendar with a new one in 1793.

Later, France saw more changes during the Third Republic in the 1800s. For a long time, the Catholic Church had a lot of influence in schools. In the 1880s, new laws changed this. The Jules Ferry laws established free education and removed religious teaching from schools. In 1905, a law was passed that separated the Church from the State. This meant the government and religious groups would act independently. These laws helped shape the modern French way of life.

In Germany, a leader named Otto von Bismarck led a movement called the Kulturkampf. This term means "culture struggle." It lasted from 1871 to 1878 in Prussia. Bismarck wanted to reduce the power of the Catholic Church in his new empire. He passed laws that made many Catholics feel treated unfairly. By the height of these measures, half of the Prussian bishops were in prison or exile.

Many monks and nuns also had to leave the country.

Other leaders also tried to change the role of religion. In Austria, Emperor Joseph II closed many monasteries to help the community. He used the money to build new parishes and welfare institutions. In Italy, politicians fought to reduce the political power of the Pope. For many years, the Pope stayed in the Vatican and felt like a prisoner.
