Anthony Nicholas Fantano is a prominent American music critic and internet personality.
He is widely recognized for running The Needle Drop. This brand includes a YouTube channel, a website, and a Twitch streaming channel. Fantano describes himself as "The Internet's Busiest Music Nerd." He uses these digital platforms to discuss and review music across many different genres. His work has helped revitalize the traditional art of record reviewing for a younger generation of listeners. Some experts believe he has successfully moved the role of the critic into a new medium.
Fantano uses a specific system to communicate his opinions on music. Most albums are evaluated on a standard scale from zero to ten. A score of five represents indifference, meaning he does not feel strongly one way or the other. Scores above five indicate he enjoys the record to varying degrees. Scores below five mean he mostly dislikes the music. He often adds descriptive qualifiers like "light," "decent," or "strong" to his numerical ratings.
For albums he finds unworthy of a full review, he may use a special "NOT GOOD" rating.
Visual cues are a major part of his reviewing process. Fantano uses the color of his flannel shirt to signal his rating to viewers. A yellow or golden flannel signifies a great album. A red flannel indicates a bad album. Beyond numbers, he uses physical gestures to express how music feels. Critics have noted that he uses facial expressions and body movements to convey ephemeral qualities of sound. These gestures help him describe things that written words might struggle to capture. He also maintains an alter-ego named Cal Chuchesta for certain content.
Fantano's career began in the mid-2000s at Southern Connecticut State University. He served as a music director for the college radio station there. In 2007, he began working at Connecticut Public Radio (WNPR) and hosted The Needle Drop. He initially published written reviews before launching video reviews on YouTube in January 2009. His first video review focused on a record by Jay Reatard. During this early period, he balanced his work at the radio station with a job at a pizza restaurant. He eventually decided to pursue The Needle Drop as a full-time career in late 2011.
His influence grew significantly over the following years. By the end of 2017, his YouTube channel reached one million subscribers. He expanded his content to include weekly track roundups and livestreamed Q&A sessions. Fantano has reviewed many significant albums, such as Death Grips' "The Money Store" in 2012, which received a perfect ten. He has also given zero ratings to albums like Green Day's "Father of All Motherfuckers" in 2020. His reach is so large that he has appeared in mainstream media. For instance, he made a cameo in Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" music video in 2019.
Fantano has also navigated various challenges and public discussions. In 2017, an article in The Fader accused him of promoting alt-right sentiments through his secondary channel, "thatistheplan." This led to the cancellation of several U.S. tour dates. Fantano called the article a "hit job" and stated the videos were satirical. He later acknowledged that certain viewers were problematic and used the experience to advocate for social justice. He has also been involved in legal matters. He successfully defended himself in a defamation lawsuit filed by singer Ronnie Radke, which was dismissed in 2025.
Today, Fantano remains a central figure in online music culture. He uses his platform for more than just criticism, such as curating the charity compilation The Needle Drop LP. This project donated profits to the Immigrant Legal Resource Center. He also engages in humorous interactions with major stars. In 2022, he had a social media exchange with the rapper Drake. Whether he is discussing a controversial album by Kanye West or collaborating with artists like Yuno Miles, his presence is felt throughout the industry. He continues to shape how people discover and value music in the digital age.
