Antarctic toothfish

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Antarctic toothfish lives in the freezing Southern Ocean. It is a very large fish. It can grow to over 2 meters long. It can also weigh more than 135 kg. This fish is black or olive brown. It has a mottled pattern on its body.

This fish has a special way to stay afloat. It lacks a swim bladder, which is a gas sac used for floating. Instead, it has fatty deposits. These fat stores help the fish stay neutrally buoyant. This means it can float in the water without wasting power.

To live in subzero water, it makes antifreeze glycoproteins. These are special proteins that act like antifreeze. They stop the fish from freezing in the cold sea.

The toothfish is a hungry hunter. It eats small fish and shrimp. It uses two long lateral lines to find food. These lines help the fish sense prey in the dark. Other animals eat the toothfish. This includes seals, orcas, and sperm whales. Some fish live for a long time. One fish lived for 48 years.
