These events happen at the December and June solstices. However, atmospheric refraction can change what a person actually sees. Refraction is the bending of light as it passes through the atmosphere. Because of this, part of the midnight sun can be seen up to 50 minutes north of the circle. On the winter solstice, the sun might appear up to 50 minutes south of the circle at sea level.

The position of the Antarctic Circle is not a fixed location. Its latitude depends on the Earth's axial tilt. This tilt is not constant and fluctuates over long periods. It changes within a margin of more than 2 degrees over a 41,000-year cycle. This movement is caused by tidal forces from the Moon's orbit. Because of these forces, the circle is currently drifting southwards. It moves at a speed of approximately 0.1 arcseconds per year. An arcsecond is a very tiny unit used to measure angles in astronomy.

These mirages can create the appearance of multiple sunsets and sunrises. In reality, the sun may simply be staying below the horizon. This happens because of how light interacts with the cold air and ice. These visual phenomena add to the complex nature of the Antarctic environment.
