In 1896, she joined the Harvard College Observatory. She became a member of the "Harvard Computers," a group of women hired to map the sky.
The Harvard Computers performed vital labor for the observatory. While men operated the telescopes, the women analyzed the photographic data. They carried out complex astronomical calculations and cataloged the images. Cannon was remarkably efficient at this work. In her first three years, she classified 1,000 stars. By 1913, her speed increased tremendously. She could classify 200 stars in a single hour. She could even classify three stars per minute just by looking at their patterns.
Cannon faced many personal and professional challenges. She lost most of her hearing due to scarlet fever. This hearing loss made socializing difficult, so she immersed herself in her research. She also worked during a time when women faced inequality. Many female assistants were paid only 25 cents an hour. They often worked seven hours a day, six days a week. Despite this, Cannon rose to become the Curator of Astronomical Photographs at Harvard. 
Her scientific impact was massive and lasting. Over her lifetime, Cannon manually classified about 350,000 stars. She also discovered 300 variable stars and five novas. Her data was so accurate that other scientists used it for major breakthroughs. For example, Cecilia Payne used Cannon's data to prove stars are mostly hydrogen and helium. Cannon's legacy is preserved in space and on Earth. There is a lunar crater named Cannon. There is also an asteroid named 1120 Cannonia.
