Ann Matthews Martin is a prominent American author of children's and young adult fiction. She is best known for creating the highly successful The Baby-Sitters Club series. Her writing focuses on the lives, emotions, and everyday experiences of young people. Many of her stories explore contemporary problems and personal struggles that readers can relate to. By blending childhood memories with fictional scenarios, she creates characters that feel authentic and real. Her work has reached a massive global audience through books, graphic novels, and television adaptations.

Martin's journey into storytelling began long before she could physically write. As a young child, she would dictate her imaginative stories to her mother, Eden Martin. This process allowed her to practice narrative structure and character development early on. By the second grade, she had discovered a true passion for creative writing. Her fourth-grade teacher recognized this talent by noting her constant writing in notebooks. This early dedication eventually led her to pursue a professional career in publishing and literature.

Her educational background provided a deep understanding of the children she writes for. After graduating from Princeton High School in 1973, she attended Smith College. There, she studied early-childhood education and child psychology from 1973 to 1977. She also contributed to the college newspaper, The Sophian. Her time at Smith was particularly influential for her identity as a feminist. She observed an environment of strong, independent women among her peers and professors. This experience inspired her to portray female characters with similar strength and independence.

Before becoming a full-time novelist, Martin gained valuable experience in the publishing industry. She worked her way up from an editorial assistant to a senior editor. During this time, she worked for well-known publishers like Scholastic and Pocket Books. She also spent time as a teacher in a split fourth and fifth-grade classroom in Connecticut. Her students, aged 8 to 13, included children with learning disabilities such as autism and dyslexia. Martin has noted that her work with these special needs children significantly influenced her writing style and themes.

Martin's literary career is marked by several major milestones and prestigious awards. She published her debut book, Bummer Summer, in 1983, which earned the Children's Choice Award in 1985. In 1985, while working as an editor at Scholastic, she began writing The Baby-Sitters Club. She authored the first 35 novels in that series before ghostwriters were hired to continue it. Her novel A Corner of the Universe received a Newbery Honor in 2003. Additionally, her book Rain Reign won the Josette Frank Award in 2015.

Beyond her books, Martin has used her success to support literacy and community needs. In 1990, she and her colleagues founded The Lisa Libraries to honor their friend, Lisa Novak. This non-profit organization works to establish libraries and distribute new books to underserved areas. That same year, she established the Ann M. Martin Foundation. This foundation provides financial support for education, art, and literacy programs. It also offers assistance to stray and abused animals.

Today, Martin remains an active figure in the literary world through various media. She served as a producer for the 2020 Netflix adaptation of The Baby-Sitters Club. She also stays busy with author appearances and the release of graphic novel versions of her work. While she maintains a quiet public profile in the Hudson Valley, she shares updates on her life via Facebook. Her ability to connect deeply with her readers ensures that her stories continue to be shared across generations.
