Animatronics have also become a staple of the restaurant and toy industries. In 1977, Chuck E. Cheese's opened as the first restaurant to feature animatronics as an attraction. This was created by Nolan Bushnell and designed by Harold Goldbrandsen. By 1980, ShowBiz Pizza Place debuted The Rock-afire Explosion to compete with Chuck E. Cheese. The technology eventually moved into homes through small, affordable toys. In 1998, Tiger Electronics released Furby, an animatronic pet. A Furby can react to its environment and speak over 800 English and "Furbish" phrases.

The scale of animatronics can vary from tiny toys to massive structures. In 2001, the largest animatronic figure ever built was created for the film Jurassic Park.
