They rename the property Animal Farm and create seven rules called Animalism. One important rule is that all animals are equal. The pigs, like Snowball and Napoleon, become the leaders of the farm. Snowball tries to build a windmill to make life easier for everyone. However, Napoleon uses his dogs to chase Snowball away. Napoleon then takes total control and changes the rules to help himself. At that time, the United Kingdom was working with the Soviet Union. Orwell did not like how leaders like Joseph Stalin ruled in Russia. He wanted to combine his art with his political ideas. He first published the book in England on 17 August 1945. At first, many publishers said no to the book. They thought it was too difficult or controversial to print. But once it was released, it became a huge success worldwide.

The book is based on the Russian Revolution of 1917.

It is also an allegory, where the events and characters represent real historical figures and political movements. Through this story, Orwell explores how the dream of equality can be lost to corruption and dictatorship.

The plot begins at Manor Farm near Willingdon, England. The farm is poorly managed by an irresponsible, alcoholic farmer named Mr. Jones.

One night, an elderly boar named Old Major holds a meeting to share his vision. He teaches the animals a revolutionary song called "Beasts of England." After Old Major dies, two younger pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, lead a revolt to drive Mr. Jones away. The animals rename the property Animal Farm and establish the Seven Commandments of Animalism. The most important rule is that "All animals are equal."

As the farm develops, a power struggle emerges between the two leaders. Snowball is an active leader who wants to modernize the farm by building a windmill. Napoleon, however, is more interested in control. In a decisive moment, Napoleon uses a group of trained dogs to chase Snowball away from the farm.

After Snowball is exiled, Napoleon assumes supreme command. He replaces democratic meetings with a small committee of governing pigs. He also uses a pig named Squealer, a skilled orator, to spread propaganda and justify his actions to the other animals.

The pigs gradually change the laws to suit their own needs. They secretly rewrite the Seven Commandments to allow themselves special privileges. For example, they begin to sleep in beds and drink alcohol. The animals are often confused or misled by Squealer’s explanations. Even when the animals face extreme hardship and hunger, Squealer uses false data to convince them they are better off than they were under Mr. Jones. The pigs eventually adopt human habits, such as walking on two legs and wearing clothes.

Orwell wrote the manuscript between November 1943 and February 1944. At this time, the United Kingdom was in a wartime alliance with the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany. Because of this alliance, many British intellectuals held the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in high esteem. Orwell, a democratic socialist, strongly disagreed with Stalin’s methods. He had been shaped by his experiences during the Spanish Civil War, specifically the conflicts between the POUM and Stalinist forces. He wanted to use his art to express his political purpose.

The book is a direct reflection of the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the subsequent Stalinist era. Many characters are allegories for real people. Old Major represents thinkers like Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin. Napoleon is an allegory for Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union. Snowball represents Leon Trotsky, a rival who was exiled. The pigs’ rise to power reflects the Soviet *nomenklatura*, which was the elite class of officials.

The story shows how the pigs eventually become indistinguishable from the human farmers they once fought.

Despite initial rejections from publishers, *Animal Farm* became a massive commercial success. This success happened as international relations shifted from the wartime alliance into the Cold War. The book has earned many prestigious honors over the decades. *Time* magazine listed it as one of the 100 best English-language novels. It also appeared on the Modern Library List of Best 20th-Century Novels. In 1996, it won a Retrospective Hugo Award.

These accolades highlight its lasting impact on global literature.

*Animal Farm* remains a vital study of power, politics, and language. It shows how leaders can manipulate truth to maintain control. By using simple animals to tell a complex story, Orwell makes the mechanics of totalitarianism easy to see. The book connects to broader themes of sociology and political science. It teaches readers to look closely at how laws are made and how they can be changed. Even many years after its publication in 1945, the story continues to be studied worldwide.
