She is known for her incredible voice and her many different musical styles. Kidjo has won five Grammy Awards, which are very prestigious music prizes. She was also the first Black African artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2021, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Kidjo uses her voice in many special ways to make music. She is fluent in five languages: Fon, French, Yorùbá, Gen (Mina), and English. She sings in all of these languages during her performances. She often uses a traditional Beninese singing style called Zilin. She also uses a technique called vocalese to sing without words. Sometimes, she even uses a personal language of her own. Her musical journey began a long time ago in Ouidah, Benin. Her father was a musician from the Fon people. Her mother was a theatre director and a choreographer. Kidjo grew up listening to many kinds of music from all over. By the age of six, she was already performing with her mother's theatre troupe. She later joined a school band called Les Sphinx. As a teenager, her music was even played on national radio. These early years helped her find her unique sound.

Kidjo has moved through many different stages of her career. In 1983, she moved to Paris to study music at a jazz school. She met Jean Hebrail, a producer she later married. They worked together to create much of her music. In 1991, she signed with Island Records and released the album Logozo. This album reached number one on the Billboard World Albums chart. Later, she worked with Columbia Records in New York. She has recorded many famous albums like Djin Djin and Eve.

Her music connects different parts of the world through sound. For example, her album Djin Djin is named after the sound of an African bell. This bell is used to greet each new day. Her album Eve was dedicated to the women of Africa. It celebrates their strength and pride. She also made an album called Remain in Light to reimagine music by the band Talking Heads. Through all her work, Kidjo connects African rhythms with jazz, rock, and pop. She shows how music can bridge many different cultures.
