These are stars that change in brightness. 
Understanding the size and mass of Andromeda is a complex task. It has a diameter of about 220,000 light-years. This makes it the largest in the Local Group by extension. Its mass is similar to the Milky Way. For a long time, people thought Andromeda was 25% to 50% more massive. However, 21st-century studies suggest the Milky Way might actually be more massive. The galaxy is located about 2.5 million light-years from Earth. 
Andromeda is also a place of constant change. About 2 to 3 billion years ago, a major merger occurred. This involved two galaxies with a mass ratio of about 4. This collision likely formed the galaxy's halo and its thick disk. We can see the results of such activity in its structure. In 1943, Walter Baade identified two types of stars in the center. He called the young, high-velocity stars Type I. He called the older, red stars Type II. 
Looking forward, the future of our cosmic neighborhood is quite dramatic. The Milky Way and Andromeda have a 50% chance of colliding. This could happen within the next 10 billion years. If they collide, they will merge together. They might form a giant elliptical galaxy or a large lenticular galaxy. This shows that even the largest structures in space are part of a larger, changing system.
