He was the Poet Laureate for ten years. This is a special job for a poet. He did not want to stay in this role forever. He chose to serve for only ten years.

As a leader, he wanted to write about real life. He wrote poems about the news. He wrote about things like homelessness and bullying. He even wrote about climate change. He also started the Poetry Archive. This is an online library. It has recordings of poets reading their own work.

Andrew found his love for poetry at school. A teacher named Peter Way inspired him. Later, he studied English at Oxford University. He met many great writers there. He also wrote a famous book about Philip Larkin. This book helped many people learn about Larkin.

Writing helps him understand the world. He likes to use clear words. He does not use many tricks. He wants his poems to be easy to read. He still teaches writing to others today.
