He was finally released in 1941 to help with defense work. He was not fully cleared of the old charges until 1955.
After the war, Tupolev worked on very large and complex projects. He helped create the Tu-4 by studying an American Boeing B-29 bomber. This was a hard job because he had to use different measurements and metals. He also designed the Tu-95, which is a large plane with special engines. Another famous design was the Tu-104, a jet airliner for passengers. His son, Aleksey, also became a great designer. Aleksey helped build the Buran space shuttle. 
Today, many people remember Tupolev for his great inventions. One large airport in Moscow is named Vnukovo Andrei Tupolev International Airport. A bronze statue of him stands in Moscow near his old office. People have also put his face on postage stamps. Many streets in different countries are named after him too. Tupolev's life was interrupted by the political turmoil of the Great Purge. In 1937, he was arrested on false charges of espionage and sabotage. While many colleagues were executed, Tupolev was imprisoned. In 1939, he was moved to an NKVD sharashka. A sharashka was a special prison for scientists and engineers. This facility was located in Bolshevo and later moved to Moscow. It was even nicknamed "Tupolevka" because he was its most famous inmate. Despite being a prisoner, he designed the Tu-2 aircraft. This plane became a vital tool during World War II.
After his release in 1941, Tupolev undertook the massive task of reverse engineering. He worked on the Tu-4 project to replicate the American Boeing B-29 Superfortress. This was a complex engineering challenge. The original B-29 used imperial measurements, but the Soviet Union used the metric system. Tupolev had to redesign the aircraft using Russian engines and equipment. He also had to use different metal alloys and metric sheet metal. He used four B-29s that had landed in Soviet territory as references. This allowed the Tu-4 to fly by the 1947 May Day parade.
In the later years of his career, Tupolev focused on jet and turboprop technology. He designed the Tu-95, which is a large strategic bomber with turboprop engines. He also introduced the Tu-104, which was the world's second operational production jet airliner. His design bureau remained a major force in the Soviet aviation industry. Even as political connections shifted, his technical influence remained strong. His son, Aleksey Tupolev, continued this legacy. Aleksey helped design the Tu-144 supersonic jet and the Buran space shuttle.
Tupolev received many high honors for his massive contributions to science. He was named a Hero of Socialist Labor three times. He also received the Order of Lenin eight times. In 1953, he became an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. His international importance was recognized by the British Royal Aeronautical Society. Many places around the world honor his memory today. Vnukovo International Airport in Moscow was renamed in his honor.
