He served during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. Masséna is remembered as one of the greatest generals of these eras. Napoleon I, the Emperor of France, gave him a special nickname. He called Masséna "the dear child of victory."

This title reflected the high level of trust Napoleon placed in his tactical abilities. Masséna was eventually named one of the original eighteen Marshals of the Empire. He also held the titles of Duke of Rivoli and Prince of Essling.

Masséna's journey to greatness was unique because he lacked a formal military education. Most high-ranking generals of his time attended elite European academies. These leaders often gained their positions through noble birth and privilege. In contrast, Masséna rose from humble beginnings through sheer competence. He was born in Nice on May 6, 1758. His father was a wine merchant who had served in the army. After his father died of tuberculosis, Masséna lived with relatives.

As a child, he worked in a soap factory. He also spent time as a cabin boy on a merchant ship.

His professional military career began in 1775 when he enlisted in Toulon. He worked his way up through the ranks of the French Royal Army. He became a corporal in 1776 and a sergeant in 1777. By 1784, at the age of 26, he reached the rank of adjutant. This was the highest rank available to a non-nobleman in that army. During this period, he also became active in masonic lodges. He eventually served as the president of the lodge La Parfaite Amitié. Following the start of the French Revolution, he transitioned into the National Guard. He served as an instructor and eventually became a lieutenant-colonel.

During the French Revolutionary Wars, Masséna proved his skill in several major campaigns. He was known for maintaining strict discipline and caring for his units. In 1792, he helped occupy the Principality of Monaco. He also participated in the siege of Toulon in late 1793. During this siege, he led an assault on Fort Lartigue. He then used the fort's heavy cannons to target the British fleet.

This action helped force the British squadron to withdraw. Shortly after, he was promoted to general of division. He later led successful offensives in the Genoa sector and captured several important forts.

Masséna played a decisive role in the Italian campaign under Napoleon Bonaparte. He was a key figure in the victories at Arcole and Rivoli.

In 1799, he achieved a major victory at the Second Battle of Zurich. This win had huge strategic consequences for France. His ability to reorganize field artillery was noted by historians. He was often described as having brilliant tactical mastery. Many of the famous French marshals actually served under his command at some point. This shows how much influence he had over the military leadership of the time.

Under the French Empire, Masséna continued to lead large forces in various theaters. He campaigned in Italy in 1805 and invaded the Kingdom of Naples in 1806. He also played a major role in the battles of Aspern-Essling and Wagram in 1809.

However, his career faced a significant setback in 1810. He led a failed invasion of Portugal that resulted in his disgrace. Because of this failure, Napoleon stopped giving him major commands. This period marked the decline of his influence within the imperial government.

Despite his later troubles, Masséna's legacy remains significant in military history. He proved that merit could overcome a lack of social status. He rose from a simple soldier to the highest levels of imperial power. After the Bourbon Restoration, he returned to political life in Paris. He died in April 1817 at the age of 58.

Today, his life is studied as an example of leadership and rapid social mobility. His impact on the French military structure was profound and lasting.
