There are different ways to reach this goal. Some people follow an evolutionary approach. This means they want slow and nonviolent change. Other people use a revolutionary approach. They seek to destroy states and institutions they see as oppressive. These two ways often overlap in real life. Many different tactics are used by different groups. This diversity is a key part of the movement.

History shows many moments of intense struggle. The movement flourished between 1880 and 1914. Mikhail Bakunin founded collectivist anarchism during this time. He was part of the First International in 1864. Later, Peter Kropotkin helped develop anarcho-communism. Anarchists participated in the Paris Commune of 1871. They also fought in the Russian Civil War. The Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939 was a major event.

The term comes from the Ancient Greek word *anarkhia*. This translates to "without a ruler." It is formed from the prefix *an-* meaning "without" and *arkhos* meaning "leader." While the word appeared in English as early as 1539, it originally suggested disorder. In the mid-19th century, the movement became a formal political doctrine. Pierre-Joseph Proudhon was the first person to call himself an anarchist.

Anarchist thought has deep roots in ancient history. In China, Taoist philosophers like Laozi and Zhuang Zhou discussed the legitimacy of the state. In Greece, Socrates constantly questioned Athenian authorities. He insisted on the importance of individual freedom of conscience. The Cynics also dismissed human law to live according to nature. During the Middle Ages, various religious sects expressed anti-state tendencies. These ideas were later revived during the Renaissance and the Enlightenment.

Modern anarchism emerged as a distinct movement during the 19th century. Different schools of thought developed to explain how to achieve a stateless society. Mikhail Bakunin founded collectivist anarchism. He joined the International Workingmen's Association, or the First International, in 1864. This group included Karl Marx, who led the General Council. However, Bakunin and the Marxists had bitter disputes. The Marxists eventually expelled the Bakuninists at the 1872 Hague Congress.

As the movement grew, new theories like anarcho-communism appeared. Peter Kropotkin, a Russian scientist, helped develop this school of thought. Anarcho-communists were inspired by the 1871 Paris Commune. They advocated for free federation and distributing goods based on need. Some anarchists also practiced syndicalism, which focuses on labor unions. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, anarchism became a global force. It was prominent in places like Argentina, China, and Japan.

The history of anarchism includes many periods of intense conflict. Anarchists participated in the Russian Civil War, specifically within the Makhnovshchina. However, the Bolshevik government eventually suppressed these movements. Another major moment was the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939. In 1936, anarchist-inspired groups took control of Barcelona. They collectivized land and worked with other leftist groups. This period is often seen as the end of the classical era of anarchism.

Anarchists use different methods to pursue social change. These are often divided into evolutionary and revolutionary approaches. Evolutionary methods favor gradual, nonviolent changes to society. Revolutionary approaches seek to actively destroy oppressive institutions. Some individuals even adopted a tactic called "propaganda of the deed." This involved using political violence to spark change. While many anarchists distanced themselves from such acts, the tactics led to significant legal restrictions. For example, the United States passed the Anarchist Exclusion Act in 1903.

Today, the anarchist movement is experiencing a resurgence. It has found new influence within anti-capitalist and anti-war movements. It also plays a role in anti-globalization protests. Modern anarchism continues to influence how people critique power and authority. It remains a way to imagine societies built on voluntary cooperation rather than force.
