This system held influence in the area from approximately 948 AD until 1911. During this era, the Kingdom of Nri was a significant power. In some towns, like Ogidi, local families held hereditary rights to kingship for many generations.

Anambra also has a significant role in more recent Nigerian history. During the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970, the area was part of the secessionist Republic of Biafra. This was a period of great hardship for the local population. Engineers during the war built a relief airstrip at Uli/Amorka, known by the code name "Annabelle."

American pilots and others used this strip to deliver food and medicine. One pilot, Carl Gustaf von Rosen, even helped form a small air force called the "Babies of Biafra." He named the group in honor of the infants who died from starvation during the conflict.

The economy of Anambra is driven by commerce, industry, and natural resources. The state is home to the Onitsha-Nnewi-Awka (ONA) Industrial Axis.

Onitsha is a major river port and one of the top commercial cities in Africa. Nnewi is a rapidly developing industrial center, sometimes called the "Taiwan of Nigeria." Nnewi is also home to Innoson, the first Nigerian vehicle manufacturer. Agriculture remains vital, with crops like oil palms, maize, rice, yams, and cassava being widely grown. The state also possesses significant untapped potential in the Anambra Basin, which may hold 1,000 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves.

Natural resources extend beyond agriculture into the energy sector. Anambra is rich in crude oil, natural gas, bauxite, and ceramic. There are more than 13 oil wells situated within the state. In 2012, the state officially became an oil-producing state after oil was struck in the Anambra River basin. Companies like Orient Petroleum and SEEPCO are active in the region. In 2015, plans were made to increase crude oil production to 3,000 barrels per day. The state is also working to be included in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to help provide infrastructure for oil-producing areas.

Urbanization brings both growth and specific challenges to the state. Anambra is the eighth most populous state in Nigeria and the second most densely populated.

In some areas, such as the stretch between Oba and Amorka, density reaches 1,500 to 2,000 persons per square kilometer. While the state is a center for innovation, rapid growth has caused issues with infrastructure. Problems include inadequate road networks, erosion, and waste disposal. To address this, structural plans were created for Onitsha, Nnewi, and Awka. These plans aim to guide land use, housing, and water supply for future generations.
