Others, like tramadol, act as serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). Tramadol works through a combination of opioid-like effects and by acting as a fast-acting serotonin releasing agent. These complex mechanisms help manage intense pain.

Finally, analgesia can be delivered topically to avoid systemic side effects. This means applying the medicine directly to the skin. For example, ibuprofen or diclofenac gels can treat painful joints. Lidocaine is a topical anesthetic used to numb mouth sores or areas for dental work. While topical use is often safer for the rest of the body, the FDA has warned that large doses of topical anesthetics can enter the bloodstream. This highlights the importance of using all pain management tools under careful medical supervision.
