The Amur River is a massive perennial waterway located in Northeast Asia.

It serves as a natural border between the Russian Far East and Northeast China. The river is part of a vast drainage basin that covers a huge area. If you include its main stem tributary, the Argun, the Amur is the tenth longest river in the world. This river is a vital lifeline for the aquatic fauna of the entire region. Its waters support complex ecosystems that have existed for many centuries.

The river's journey begins in the hills of western Northeast China. It starts at the confluence of two major affluents, the Shilka and the Argun. From this high elevation, the water flows east to form the boundary between China and Russia. The river follows a great arc toward the southeast for about 1,000 kilometers. Along this path, it receives many tributaries and passes through various small towns. One significant moment occurs at Huma, where the Huma He joins the flow.

As the river continues south, it undergoes major changes in size and shape. Between the cities of Blagoveshchensk in Russia and Heihe in China, the river widens significantly. This widening happens because it is joined by the Zeya, one of its most important tributaries. Later, the Amur arcs east again and turns southeast at the Bureya confluence. It then flows for nearly 1,000 kilometers without another significant tributary until it meets the Songhua. At this meeting point, the river turns northeast toward Khabarovsk.

After joining the Ussuri, the river stops defining the Russia–China border. It then spreads out into a braided character, which means it flows through many small channels. This happens as it moves through a wide valley in eastern Russia. The river passes the towns of Amursk and Komsomolsk-on-Amur. Eventually, the valley narrows, and the river flows onto plains. It meets the Amgun river before turning sharply east into an estuary at Nikolayevsk-on-Amur. Finally, it flows into the Strait of Tartary.

The biological diversity of the Amur is quite remarkable. The river is home to many large predatory fish like the Amur pike and taimen. You can also find Amur catfish, predatory carp, and yellowcheek. The largest fish species is the kaluga, a type of sturgeon. The kaluga is one of the largest freshwater fish on Earth and can reach great lengths.

Additionally, the river supports the northernmost populations of the Amur softshell turtle and the Indian lotus.

Human history in the Amur Valley is deeply connected to these waters. For centuries, Tungusic and Mongol people lived here, relying on fishing for survival. Some groups, like the Nanai, were known as "Fish-skin Tatars" because they made clothes from fish skins.

During the Ming dynasty, Chinese expeditions reached the river and built the Yongning Temple. In the 1600s, Russian Cossack explorers like Vassili Poyarkov and Yerofey Khabarov arrived. They established forts such as Albazin to control the region and collect tribute.

Today, the Amur remains a major geopolitical factor in relations between China and Russia. The river is a symbol of the connection between the two nations. Its many names reflect this shared history. The Chinese name Heilongjiang means "Black Dragon River." The Manchu name, Sahaliyan Ula, also means "Black River." These names show how different cultures have viewed and respected this massive waterway throughout time.
