Amol is a significant city located in the Central District of Amol County. It sits within the Mazandaran province of Iran.

The history of Amol is incredibly ancient. Some historians believe the city was established during the 1st millennium BC.

The Amard people were known for being brave and capable. They played roles in the history of the Persian Empire. They assisted the Achaemenid Empire in several major battles. These included the invasion of Greece and the Battle of Opis. Historical accounts like those from Quintus Curtius Rufus mention them. He noted that the Immortals, who were Achaemenid archers, were Amard people. During the Parthian Empire, Amol was a prosperous center known as Homo or Hamo. The Parthian King Phraates I defeated the Mardas in this region. He moved some of these people to northern Khorasan. This area was known as Amol Zam.
Amol held great importance during the Sasanian Empire. It served as the capital of Mazandaran from the 3rd century AD. This role continued through the Ilkhanate dynasty of the Mongol Empire. During the Sasanian era, the city's importance grew. This was partly because followers of Mazdak escaped to the city. Amol was a major center for minting coins. Sasanian coins often used the mark "m" to represent Amol.
Following the arrival of Islam, Amol remained a key political site. It was the capital of northern Iran under the Alid and Ziyarid dynasties. The inhabitants of Amol embraced Islam during the reign of the Abbasid Caliph Mahdi. This occurred between 775 and 785 AD. The city saw much conflict during this era. For example, Sa'id ibn al-As led 4,000 troops to conquer Tabaristan. This conflict with Farrukhan the Great lasted two years. Later, the Zaydid dynasty established its government with Amol as its center. The city was known for active commerce and trading. During the Ziyarid period, geographers wrote about its thriving silk industry.
In the later medieval period, Amol continued to be a seat of power. The Ziyarid dynasty held power here for many years. In 1012, Qabus was overthrown by his own army. He was succeeded by his son, Manuchihr. Later, the Ziyarid dynasty saw Amol serve as the capital of Iran until 1090. During this time, Hasan al-Utrush built the first seminary in the city. This site was later named the Imam Hassan Askari Mosque. The Afrasiyab dynasty also flourished in the region. They were also known as the Kia dynasty. They established their kingdom in Amol in 1349.
Today, Amol is recognized as a city of history, science, and philosophy. It is often called the "City that does not die."
