It is a medium bear. It likes to live in forests.
This bear eats many kinds of food. It eats different things in different seasons. It may even visit people for food.
Some bears have different colors. A cinnamon bear has reddish-brown fur.
Other bears can be white or gray. There are many kinds of these bears. They are doing well in the wild.
The American black bear lives in North America.

Black bears are omnivores. This means they eat many kinds of food. Their diet changes with the seasons. They can eat almost anything. This helps them survive through the Ice Age. Other bears died out because they only ate one type of food.
Not all black bears look the same. Some bears have brown or reddish fur. We call these cinnamon bears. Some bears have silvery-gray fur. We call these glacier bears.

The American black bear is a medium-sized bear found across North America.

To survive, these bears use a very flexible way of living. They can eat many different kinds of things. This generalist behavior helped them through the last Ice Age. Other large bears in North America could not eat enough variety. Because of this, the giant short-faced bear and the Florida spectacled bear went extinct.
Scientists have studied how these bears changed over a long time. Their ancestors split from sun bears about 4.58 million years ago. Later, the American black bear split from the Asian black bear. Fossil evidence shows a primitive bear called *Protarctos abstrusus* lived 4.95 million years ago. This old bear might be a direct ancestor of today's black bear. Early fossils from Pennsylvania looked a lot like bears in Asia. Over time, some specimens even grew to be as large as grizzly bears.
There are many different types of black bears called subspecies. Some have reddish fur and are called cinnamon bears. In Alaska, you can find the silvery-gray glacier bear.

You might see black bears in places you visit on vacation. Many live in the Appalachian Mountains from Maine down to Georgia.
The American black bear, known scientifically as Ursus americanus, is a medium-sized mammal native to North America.

To understand how they survive, we can look at their generalist behavior. This means they are able to use many different types of food sources. This flexibility is a major reason why they survived the last Ice Age. Other large North American bears, like the giant short-faced bear and the lesser short-faced bear, became extinct.
Evolutionary history shows a complex path for these bears. Genetic studies indicate that American black bears split from a common ancestor with brown bears and polar bears 5.05 million years ago (mya). They are more closely related to Asian black bears, which are considered sister taxa. The ancestors of both black bear species diverged from sun bears 4.58 mya. Later, the American and Asian lineages split from each other 4.08 mya. Fossils of a primitive bear called Protarctos abstrusus from 4.95 mya may be a direct ancestor. Early fossils found in Pennsylvania resembled Asian species, though some later specimens grew as large as grizzly bears.
There are sixteen traditionally recognized subspecies of the American black bear. These subspecies are often defined by their color or where they live. For example, the cinnamon bear has reddish-brown fur. The glacier bear in southeastern Alaska has silvery-gray fur with a blue luster.

Black bears are highly successful in terms of population numbers. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists them as a "least-concern" species. This is because their population is estimated to be twice as large as all other bear species combined.
Sometimes, different bear species can produce hybrid offspring because they are reproductively compatible.
Today, black bears inhabit many different environments across the continent. They are found in the Appalachian Mountains, the Rocky Mountains, and along the West Coast.
