Another species is altocumulus lenticularis, which is lens-shaped. These clouds often form due to uplift near mountains. Because of their shape, they are sometimes mistaken for unidentified flying objects. The floccus species appears as tufted clouds. These tufts are a sign of greater air instability. Finally, there is the castellanus species. This type is turreted and can achieve significant vertical development.

There are also many varieties based on how opaque the clouds are. Opacity refers to how much light can pass through the cloud. The stratiformis species has three opacity-based varieties. These are translucidus, perlucidus, and opacus. These varieties are not usually applied to the lenticularis, castellanus, or floccus species. We also see pattern-based varieties in the sky. The radiatus variety is arranged in parallel bands. The duplicatus or undulatus varieties show wavy patterns. When extensive undulatus formations appear, they are called a mackerel sky.

Weather observers use specific codes to identify these clouds. For example, altocumulus castellanus is coded as CM8. This species shows grey shading and signals instability. The floccus species also uses the CM8 code. The lenticularis species is coded as CM4 on the SYNOP weather observation. If altocumulus stratiformis radiatus is increasing, it is coded as CM5. Chaotic altocumulus, which has multiple species in layers, is coded as CM9. These codes help meteorologists track changing weather patterns accurately.
