In 1493, Ojeda sailed on a big trip with Christopher Columbus. He helped look for gold on the island of Hispaniola. During these trips, he was often very harsh to the local people. This caused many fights and made the local tribes angry.

In 1499, Ojeda went on a new voyage. He sailed with Amerigo Vespucci. They saw many new places. They saw islands like Aruba and Curaçao. They also saw the coast of Venezuela. They saw houses built on stilts over the water. Because of these houses, they named the land Venezuela. This name means "Little Venice."

Ojeda tried to start a new colony in 1502. He called it Santa Cruz. It was the first Spanish home on the mainland of the Americas. However, the colony did not last long. There was much fighting with the local people. His own men even took him prisoner. In the end, his trips did not make much money for him.
