That scent comes from a huge group of plants called Allium. This group is very large. It has over 1,112 different species. Many of these plants are food. You likely eat onions, garlic, leeks, or chives.

Most Alliums grow from bulbs. A bulb is a part of the plant that stores food. Some bulbs are tiny, only 2 mm wide. Other bulbs can grow to 10 cm. Some plants, like leeks, grow thick leaves instead of bulbs.

The Allium smell comes from special chemicals. These chemicals make the plants taste strong. The taste also depends on the soil. If the soil has no sulfur, the plants lose their onion flavor.

Most Alliums grow in cool areas in the North. A few grow in Brazil or Africa. At the top of a tall stalk, they grow flowers. These flowers form a shape called an umbel. An umbel is a group of flowers that spread out from one point. The seeds are small, black, and round.
