He is best known for being the first civilian director of the Central Intelligence Agency, also called the CIA. He served as the head of this agency for a very long time. During his years in charge, he managed many secret tasks for the United States. Some of these tasks involved helping change governments in places like Iran and Guatemala. He also oversaw the Project MKUltra program and the Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba. Because the invasion in Cuba failed, President John F. Kennedy asked him to resign.

His life was full of many different jobs and roles. He grew up in New York as the son of a minister. His family was very involved in law and government. For example, his brother John Foster Dulles was the Secretary of State. His sister Eleanor Lansing Dulles was also a diplomat. Before working for the government, Allen worked as a corporate lawyer. He was a partner at a firm called Sullivan & Cromwell. This firm helped him build many connections around the world. He also served as a leader for the Council on Foreign Relations.

During World War II, Dulles worked in a special way to gather secrets. He joined the Office of Strategic Services, which was known as the OSS.

He lived in Bern, Switzerland, to do this work. While there, he met with many people who were fighting against the Nazis. One important group was led by a priest named Heinrich Maier. This group sent Dulles news about German tanks and planes. This information helped Allied bombers find important targets. He also received reports about the mass murder happening at Auschwitz.

As the war ended, Dulles was involved in complex business matters. He and his law firm worked with some German business leaders. They helped move money out of Germany to other countries. This happened as the Nazi regime was losing the war. Some of this money had been taken from Jewish victims of the Holocaust. This part of his work remains a topic of study for historians. He also helped some Jewish people escape from Nazi Germany to the United States. He used his position to help people find safety during a hard time.

After he left the CIA, Dulles had one more major job. President Kennedy appointed him to the Warren Commission. This was a group of people tasked with investigating the assassination of President Kennedy. Some people felt there was a conflict of interest because he had been dismissed by Kennedy. They wondered if his past work with the CIA would affect the investigation. Even though the CIA was cleared of involvement, people still debate his influence. His life shows how much one person can shape the history of a nation.
