Alice Springs is a significant settlement in the Northern Territory of Australia.

It is the third-largest settlement in the territory, following Darwin and Palmerston. The town sits near the geographic centre of the Australian continent. While Geoscience Australia notes there is no single official centre due to the earth's curved surface, the town is nearly equidistant from Adelaide and Darwin. The surrounding region is known as Central Australia or the Red Centre. This is an arid environment composed of several different deserts.

The town's geography is defined by the MacDonnell Ranges and the Todd River. The Todd River usually remains dry, but it straddles the northern side of the mountain ranges. The landscape is characterized by a wide temperature range. Summer averages reach high maximums, while winter averages see low minimums. The area is home to various natural habitats including mountain ranges, waterholes, and gorges. These features are central to the local environment and the identity of the region.

The Arrernte people are the traditional owners of the Alice Springs area. They have inhabited the Central Australian desert for at least 30,000 years. The traditional name for the township is Mparntwe, which means "watering place." This name refers to Atherreyurre, a waterhole in the Todd River at the Old Telegraph Station. Mparntwe covers most of the township, but there are other names like Irlpme for the south and Antulye for the east. The Arrernte language consists of five distinct dialects. According to traditional histories, the landscape was shaped by the Yeperenye, Ntyarlke, and Utnerrengatye caterpillars and the Akngwelye, or wild dogs.

European history in the region began with expeditions and communication technology. In 1861–62, John McDouall Stuart led an expedition west of the current town. This established a vital route from the south of the continent to the north. In 1872, the Australian Overland Telegraph Line (OTL) was completed. This line linked Adelaide to Darwin and Great Britain. A repeater station was built on this line ten years after Stuart's expedition. Surveyor William Whitfield Mills named the site Alice Springs after Alice, the wife of telegraph pioneer Charles Todd.

The settlement was officially known as Stuart until August 31, 1933.

Significant growth occurred through various stages of infrastructure and conflict. Gold was discovered at Arltunga in 1887, which led to more significant European settlement. In 1909, the Stuart Town Gaol was built when the European population was fewer than 20 people. The arrival of the train line in 1929 caused the population to grow. World War II brought even more dramatic changes to the town. Before the war, the settlement had fewer than 500 Europeans. During the war, it became the No. 9 Australian Staging Camp.

When Darwin was threatened, Alice Springs became the wartime civilian capital of the Northern Territory. The number of posted soldiers peaked at approximately 8,000, and nearly 200,000 personnel passed through the area.

Modern Alice Springs is a major hub for tourism and defense. In the 1960s, the Pine Gap joint defence satellite monitoring base was developed nearby.

Today, tourism is the most important industry. The town features the Todd Mall, which hosts Aboriginal art galleries and community markets.

As of June 2025, the population was 34,783, accounting for about 10 percent of the Northern Territory's population.

The built environment reflects a mix of Aboriginal and European influences. Historical structures include the Overland Telegraph Station and the Old Courthouse. Adelaide House, built in 1926, served as the territory's first hospital.
