Ali Hassan Mwinyi was a leader in Tanzania. He was born in 1925. Before he was a leader, he was a teacher. He worked in many schools for many years. In 1985, he became the second president of Tanzania. He took over after Julius Nyerere retired.

When Mwinyi started, the economy was in a slump. This means the country had money problems. There was not enough of many goods. Mwinyi wanted to make things better. He changed how business worked. He let people trade more easily. He also worked with groups like the IMF to get loans. These loans helped the country.

He also changed how politics worked. For a long time, there was only one party. Mwinyi helped start a system with many parties. This gave people more choices. Some people called him "Mzee Rukhsa." This name meant "everything goes." It was because he pushed for many changes. He also spoke out against apartheid in South Africa. Mwinyi died in 2024 at age 98.
