This book was used to teach students for many years. He wanted his books to be easy for everyone to read. He put hard math in the notes at the back.

He had a new way to think about prices. He used the idea of supply and demand. Supply is how much of something is available. Demand is how much people want it. He said these two things work like two blades of scissors. They work together to set a price. He also used graphs to show these ideas. These drawings helped people see how markets work. Marshall wanted his work to help make life better for workers.

He lived from 1842 to 1924. He is often called the father of scientific economics. This is because he made the study of money and goods much more precise. He wanted to turn economics into a real science. He used math to help explain how the world works. His ideas helped shape how people study economics for many years.

Marshall had a very interesting way of explaining how prices are set. He used the idea of supply and demand. Supply is how much of a product is available to buy. Demand is how much people actually want that product. He said these two things work together like the two blades of a pair of scissors. One blade is the cost to make things. The other blade is how much people want them. They must work together to decide the final price.

His life was full of learning and big changes. He was born in London to a family that worked in banks. He was very good at math at Cambridge University. At first, he wanted to study physics. Later, he switched to philosophy and ethics. He believed that studying economics could help improve life for working people. He married Mary Paley, who was also a teacher. They worked together on books about the economy.

Marshall wrote many important books during his long career. His most famous book was called Principles of Economics. He published the first volume in 1890. It was a huge success all over the world. The book grew from 750 pages to 870 pages over eight editions. He also wrote The Economics of Industry with his wife in 1879. He was careful to write for regular people. He put the hardest math in the notes at the back. This way, anyone could understand his main ideas.

Today, we still use many of the tools Marshall created. He was one of the first to use graphs to show economic ideas. Before him, people mostly used words to explain things. His supply and demand graphs made complex ideas easy to see. He also helped create the Cambridge School of economists. This group included famous thinkers like John Maynard Keynes. His work changed economics from just studying markets to studying human behavior.

He lived from July 26, 1842, to July 13, 1924. Many scholars call him the father of scientific economics. He worked to turn economics into a precise and rigorous science. His ideas helped shape the field of microeconomics for many decades. He is a central figure in the neoclassical approach to economics. This approach focuses on how individuals and firms make decisions.

Marshall's journey into economics was not direct. He was born in Bermondsey, London. His father, William Marshall, was a clerk at the Bank of England. Alfred was a gifted mathematician at St John's College, Cambridge. He initially studied physics but experienced a mental crisis. This led him to switch his focus to philosophy and metaphysics. He eventually moved into ethics and utilitarianism. He believed economics was essential for improving the lives of the working class. This social goal drove his scientific interest in economic systems.

One of Marshall's greatest contributions was his analysis of value and price. Before Marshall, economists often disagreed on what determined a product's value. Some focused on the cost of production. Others focused on how much people wanted the item, known as utility. Marshall used a "scissors" analogy to explain this. He said supply and demand are like the two blades of a pair of scissors. One blade represents the cost of production. The other blade represents consumer demand or marginal utility. Both blades must work together to determine the market price.

Marshall also introduced a vital way to look at time in economics. He categorized costs into different types based on time periods. In the short run, supply cannot change easily. In this period, market value depends mostly on demand. In an intermediate period, businesses can use existing buildings and machines. He called these fixed or overhead costs. In this stage, variable costs have the most influence on price. In the long run, even buildings and machines must be replaced. Therefore, prices must eventually cover these long-term replacement costs.

To make these complex ideas clear, Marshall used visual tools. He was one of the first to develop standard supply and demand graphs. These graphs showed curves for supply and demand. They also illustrated market equilibrium and consumer surplus. Before these diagrams, economists relied mostly on long written explanations. Marshall's graphs allowed for a visual representation of complex theories. This made it much easier to see how price and quantity relate. His method was quickly copied by teachers and students worldwide.

Marshall's most famous work was the book *Principles of Economics*. He began writing it in 1881. The first volume was published in 1890 to massive global acclaim. The book was very large and grew through many editions. It started at 750 pages and reached 870 pages by the eighth edition. He also wrote *The Economics of Industry* in 1879 with his wife, Mary Paley.

Marshall was careful to write for the general public. He placed difficult mathematical proofs in footnotes and appendices. This allowed laypeople to understand his main arguments.

His career took him to several important universities. He served as the first principal at University College, Bristol. He later became a professor at Balliol College, Oxford. Eventually, he returned to Cambridge University as a professor in 1885. At Cambridge, he helped found the Cambridge School of economists. This group focused on the theory of the firm and welfare economics. His students and successors included famous thinkers like Arthur Cecil Pigou and John Maynard Keynes. His influence on the teaching of economics in English-speaking countries was decisive.
