Cuza made many new rules to help his people. He wanted to make the country modern. He helped start schools that were free for children. He also helped peasants get land to work on. He founded two big universities to help students learn.
But not everyone was happy with Cuza. Many rich landowners did not like his new laws. They felt he was taking too much power. In 1866, a group of people forced him to leave. This is called an abdication. Cuza had to leave his home and live in other countries. He died in 1873. Today, many people see him as a national hero.
Alexandru Ioan Cuza was a very important leader in history. He is known as one of the founders of modern Romania.
In 1859, something amazing happened for the people of Moldavia and Wallachia. These were two separate states that wanted to be one. Cuza was elected as the Prince of Moldavia on January 5, 1859. Then, he was also elected as the Prince of Wallachia on January 24, 1859. This double election helped the two states join together. In 1862, they officially became the Romanian United Principalities. Bucharest became the single capital city for this new nation.
Cuza wanted to make his country modern and strong. He worked with a leader named Mihail Kogălniceanu to start many reforms. One big change was in 1863 when he took land from monasteries. This helped the state get more money for its work. In 1864, he passed a law to help the peasants. This law gave peasants the right to own the land they worked. He also helped create new rules for courts and daily life.
Education was also a very important part of his plan. Cuza wanted all children to have a chance to learn. In 1864, he started a law for free public schools. This was for primary schools, which are the first schools children attend. He also helped found the University of Iași in 1860. Later, he helped start the University of Bucharest in 1864. He even helped build a modern army and a navy.
Even though he did great things, some people were unhappy. Many rich landowners and business owners did not like his new laws. They felt he was taking too much power for himself. In February 1866, a group of people forced him to step down. This is called an abdication. Cuza had to leave his home and live in other countries like France. He died in Heidelberg in 1873. Today, many people in Romania still call him a hero.
Alexandru Ioan Cuza was a transformative leader of the 19th century. He is recognized as a founder of the modern Romanian state.
In 1859, Cuza achieved a historic political feat through a double election. The states of Moldavia and Wallachia were separate principalities. On January 5, 1859, Cuza was elected Prince of Moldavia. Shortly after, on January 24, 1859, he was elected Prince of Wallachia.
Cuza used his authority to launch many modernization reforms. He worked closely with Mihail Kogălniceanu, an intellectual from the 1848 revolution. One major step was the secularization of monastic estates in 1863. At that time, over one-quarter of Romania's farmland was held by untaxed monasteries. These lands supported foreign monks in places like Mount Athos. By nationalizing these estates, Cuza increased state revenue without adding new taxes to citizens. He also introduced new legal frameworks, including the Civil and Criminal Codes. These were based on the Napoleonic Code, a famous set of laws from France.
Land reform was another central part of his political mission. In 1864, Cuza passed the Agrarian Law to help the peasantry. This law aimed to end the corvée, which was a system of forced labor. Under this reform, peasants received titles to the land they worked. However, landlords still retained ownership of one-third of the land.
Cuza also focused heavily on the importance of education and infrastructure. He founded the University of Iași in 1860 and the University of Bucharest in 1864. He also established a law for compulsory, tuition-free primary education. Although the system faced funding shortages, it was a major step toward literacy. To protect the new nation, he developed a modern army and founded the Romanian Naval Forces. He worked closely with France to build these military structures.
Despite these successes, Cuza faced intense political opposition. His reforms alienated powerful groups, including conservative landowners and business owners. He attempted to rule with significant power, similar to the French leader Napoleon III. This style of leadership, known as benevolent authoritarianism, caused tension. In 1866, a group called the "monstrous coalition" formed against him. This group included both Conservatives and Liberals.
Cuza spent his remaining years living in exile. He traveled through cities such as Paris, Vienna, and Wiesbaden. He was accompanied by his wife, Elena Rosetti, and his two sons.
