Vertinsky developed a very specific method for his musical performances. He created a stage persona based on the character of Pierrot. This figure wore a face covered in white powder. This method allowed him to act out a story while he sang. He became so famous for this that people called him the "Russian Pierrot."

His performances were often divided into different artistic styles. Early in his career, he used the white-faced Pierrot persona. Later, he developed a "Black Pierrot" stage persona. His songs often featured a sense of cosmopolitan chic. These songs, or elegies, used imagery of tropical birds and foreign ports. He sang about palm trees, ceiling fans, and pink-tinted seas. This style provided a sense of escape for audiences during difficult times.
