Alexander Mikhailovich Prokhorov was a pioneering physicist who fundamentally changed our understanding of light and energy.

He was a leader in the field of quantum electronics. This science explores how tiny particles, such as electrons, interact with electromagnetic radiation. His most significant contributions involved the development of the maser and the laser. These technologies rely on controlled energy emissions to function. Prokhorov's research provided the theoretical and practical foundations for these modern tools. His work bridges the gap between complex particle physics and usable technology.

Prokhorov's scientific journey involved several distinct stages of discovery. In 1947, he began studying electrons within a synchrotron. A synchrotron is a large cyclic particle accelerator. He discovered that electrons orbiting in this machine emit energy primarily in the microwave spectral range. This finding became the basis for his habilitation work in 1951. Later, in 1955, he shifted his focus to electron paramagnetic resonance, or EPR. This research involved studying the relaxation times of ions within an aluminum oxide lattice. Each stage of his career built upon the last to refine how we manipulate energy.

One of his most important breakthroughs involved the creation of a molecular oscillator. Working with scientist Nikolay Basov, Prokhorov developed the theoretical grounds for this device. They successfully constructed an oscillator using ammonia as a base. To make this work, they proposed using inhomogeneous electric and magnetic fields. This method allowed for the production of what is known as population inversion. This process is essential for creating coherent radiation. Their findings were first presented at a national conference in 1952. They were officially published between 1954 and 1955.

In 1957, Prokhorov made another major leap while studying ruby. Ruby is a red, chromium-doped version of aluminum oxide. He realized this specific material could serve as an active medium for a laser. In 1958, he also proposed a new design for a laser resonator. He called this the "open type" cavity design. This specific structural idea is still widely used in modern science today. In 1963, he collaborated with A. S. Selivanenko to suggest a laser utilizing two-quantum transitions. These specific discoveries moved the laser from a theory to a physical reality.

Prokhorov's life was marked by significant historical events and personal resilience. He was born on July 11, 1916, in Queensland, Australia. His parents were Russian revolutionaries who moved the family back to Russia in 1923. During World War II, Prokhorov joined the Red Army as an infantryman. He was wounded twice during his service in the conflict. In 1946, he was awarded the Medal for Courage for his actions. Despite these hardships, he returned to his scientific studies at the Lebedev Physical Institute. He eventually defended his Ph.D. thesis regarding the stabilization of frequency in a tube oscillator.

His scientific achievements earned him the highest honors in the world. In 1964, Prokhorov was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. He shared this prestigious award with Nikolay Basov and Charles Hard Townes.

This prize recognized their fundamental work on lasers and masers. He also received the Lenin Prize in 1959 and became a professor at Moscow State University. Throughout his life, he earned five Orders of Lenin. He was also named a Hero of Socialist Labour on two separate occasions, in 1969 and 1986.

The legacy of Prokhorov continues through both institutions and people. He served as the acting director of the General Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences for many years. Following his death in 2002, the institute was renamed in his honor. His son, Kiril Prokhorov, followed in his footsteps to become a physicist. Kiril now leads a laser-related laboratory at the very institute named after his father. Prokhorov's influence reaches into many fields, from microelectronics to nanotechnology. His work remains a cornerstone of modern optical and electromagnetic research.
