His father was a grand prince. Alexander became a leader in the city of Novgorod. He also became the Grand Prince of Vladimir.

Alexander led his people in two famous battles. In 1240, he fought a Swedish army. This fight happened by the Neva River. Because of this win, people call him "Nevsky." In 1242, he fought a battle on the ice. He defeated a group called the crusaders. This victory helped stop them from moving further east.

Alexander made hard choices to protect his land. He agreed to pay money to the Golden Horde. The Golden Horde was a group that ruled much of the area. This deal helped keep the Orthodox Church safe. Some people think his wins were not as big as stories say. Others say he helped the Mongols stay in control.
