Trebek's professional life followed a path of constant learning and hard work. He was born on July 22, 1940, in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. He grew up in a bilingual household speaking both French and English. After attending a military college, he graduated from the University of Ottawa in 1961. He earned a degree in philosophy, a field of study involving fundamental questions about existence and knowledge. During his university years, he was an active member of the English Debating Society. This background in debate likely helped his later success in broadcasting.

His broadcasting career began in 1961 with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). He worked many different roles to gain experience in the industry. He often worked at night after attending school in the mornings. He served as an announcer and covered special events like horse racing and curling. His early hosting jobs included the music program Music Hop in 1963. He also hosted the high school quiz show Reach for the Top in 1966. Later, he introduced classical music programs and hosted a weekly skating program for the CBC.

In 1973, Trebek moved to the United States to expand his career. He worked for NBC hosting the game show The Wizard of Odds. He also hosted High Rollers, which had two different versions on NBC. Between these roles, he hosted the CBS show Double Dare. Trebek became known for his ability to manage multiple shows at once. In 1991, he made broadcasting history by hosting three American game shows simultaneously. On February 4, 1991, he added To Tell the Truth to his workload. At that time, he was already hosting Jeopardy! and Classic Concentration.

Trebek's career was marked by many unique and surprising moments. On April Fools' Day in 1997, he participated in a famous television swap. He traded places with Pat Sajak, the host of Wheel of Fortune. For one day, Trebek hosted Wheel of Fortune while Sajak hosted Jeopardy!. He also made appearances in scripted television, such as playing a "Man in Black" on The X-Files. He even appeared in a cameo for the 2020 NHL entry draft to announce a draft pick.

The scale of his work was immense and officially recognized. In 2014, Guinness World Records named him the record holder for most episodes of a game show hosted. At that time, he had hosted 6,829 episodes. His influence extended to politics when he moderated a debate for the Pennsylvania governor's race in 2018. While he later apologized for his performance in that debate, it showed his willingness to engage with serious public events. He remained a respected figure in both entertainment and public life.

Trebek's life ended following a courageous battle with illness. He passed away on November 8, 2020, at the age of 80. This occurred after he had lived with stage IV pancreatic cancer for 20 months. At the time of his death, he was still under contract to host Jeopardy! until 2022. His legacy continues through the show he helped define for generations. Following his death, guest hosts filled in for the remainder of his final season. Eventually, new permanent hosts were chosen to carry the program forward.
