He is best known for his work exploring African American history and family lineage. His writing helped connect many people to their ancestors. This process of researching family history is called genealogy. Haley's work changed how the public viewed the history of Black Americans. He showed that many families have deep, complex roots that span across continents.

Haley's professional journey began in the United States Coast Guard.

He enlisted in May 1939 and served for 20 years. During long voyages in the Pacific theater, he taught himself to write. He even earned money by writing love letters for other sailors. Eventually, the Coast Guard created a specific rating for him. He became the first chief journalist in the service. He held this rank until his retirement in 1959.

His literary career included several different types of writing. First, he worked as a journalist and a senior editor for Reader's Digest. He also conducted famous interviews for Playboy magazine. These interviews included notable figures like jazz musician Miles Davis and Muhammad Ali. In 1965, he published his first major book.

This was *The Autobiography of Malcolm X*. He wrote it by conducting many in-depth interviews with the leader of the Nation of Islam.

The autobiography was a massive success in the publishing world. It became a consistent best-seller for many years. By 1977, the book had sold approximately six million copies. In 1998, *Time* magazine named it one of the ten most influential nonfiction books of the 20th century. Haley also received the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for this work. This book followed Malcolm X's life from his early years to his assassination in 1965.

In 1976, Haley published his most famous novel, *Roots: The Saga of an American Family*.

This book was based on his own genealogical research. It tells the story of Kunta Kinte, who was captured in The Gambia in 1767. Haley spent 12 years researching this history through travel and records. He visited the village of Jufure to speak with a griot, or tribal historian. He even tracked the ship, *The Lord Ligonier*, which he believed carried his ancestor to America.

The impact of *Roots* reached a global scale. The novel was published in 37 different languages. In 1977, it won a special Pulitzer Prize. That same year, ABC aired a television miniseries based on the book. A record-breaking 130 million viewers watched the program. This massive popularity sparked a huge increase in public interest in genealogy. It helped many people realize that Black American history was long and continuous.

Despite his success, Haley faced significant legal and academic challenges. He was involved in a lawsuit regarding plagiarism. A writer named Harold Courlander sued him over his novel *The African*. Haley settled the case out of court in 1978 and paid $650,000. Additionally, some genealogists have questioned his research methods. They argued that some of his findings in *Roots* could not be proven by written records. Some experts suggested his information may have come from circular reporting.

Today, Alex Haley's legacy is preserved in many ways.
